"The goal of Anonymous Printmakers is to bring printmaking, which has seemingly faded into an unseen world over the past couple of years, back to the front lines. Printmaking can offer a variety of mediums and formats to express oneself and we find it important to show these things. Over the past couple of years, mainly within the Academy and our surroundings in Antwerp, printmaking has fallen into the background, exhibitions have stopped happening, printmakers take on different mediums but there is nonetheless still an audience for prints and the printed world." This book looks at comics through the lens of Art History, examining the past influence of art-historical methodologies on comics scholarship to scope how they can be applied to Comics Studies in the present and future. It unearths how early comics scholars deployed art-historical approaches, including stylistic analysis, iconography, Cultural History and the social history of art, and proposes how such methodologies, updated in light of disciplinary developments within Art History, could be usefully adopted in the study of comics today. Through a series of indicative case studies of British and American comics like Eagle, The Mighty Thor, 2000AD, Escape and Heartbreak Hotel, it argues that art-historical methods better address overlooked aspects of visual and material form. Bringing Art History back into the interdisciplinary nexus of comics scholarship raises some fundamental questions about the categories, frameworks and values underlying contemporary Comics Studies. Ian Horton is Reader in Graphic Communication at the University of the Arts London, UK. Maggie Gray is Senior Lecturer in Critical & Historical Studies at Kingston University, UK.

"Albrecht Durer résume à lui seul la Renaissance européenne et la gravure fut, sans conteste, son médium de prédilection. Pour la première fois, deux des plus importantes collections d'œuvres de Durer en France, celle du musée Condé à Chantilly et celle de la Bibliothèque nationale de France, unissent leurs forces. Plus de deux cents feuilles, dessins et gravures, mettent en valeur l'éblouissante maîtrise technique de l'artiste et rendent compte de son rôle dans les bouleversements esthétiques de son temps. Collections et collectionneurs de gravures en europe (1500-1815). Première publication d'envergure consacrée aux collectionneurs d'estampes européens (XVIe-XIXe siècle), cet ouvrage réunit dix-huit contributions émanant des principaux historiens de la gravure français et internationaux, conservateurs de musées et de bibliothèques, universitaires, jeunes chercheurs et spécialistes confirmés. Alors que jusqu'à présent, seules les collections de tableaux, de dessins ou d'antiques ont principalement retenu l'attention, malgré des recherches récentes sur quelques figures de collectionneurs d'estampes, il manquait une étude d'ensemble approfondie tant sur les acteurs (marchands, « curieux d'estampes », institutions...) que sur les processus à l'oeuvre dans les pratiques de collection.Telle est l'ambition de cet ouvrage qui s'articule autour de trois sections. Acquérir, où sont examinées les pratiques d'acquisition de six collectionneurs privés français, flamands et allemands, et d'une institution, le cabinet des estampes de la collection royale, nationale puis impériale (actuelle Bibliothèque nationale de France) entre 1750 et 1815. Inventorier, classer, où sont interrogées les approches et les méthodes de quelques « curieux », selon la terminologie employée, qu'ils soient magistrats, savants ou artistes. Des délectations particulières, enfin, où l'attention est portée sur des objets de collection spécifiques : gravure de mode, portraits, oeuvre complet de certains artistes, etc. --

Japanese comics, commonly known as manga, are a global sensation. Critics, scholars, and everyday readers have often viewed this artform through an Orientalist framework, treating manga as the exotic antithesis to American and European comics. In reality, the history of manga is deeply intertwined with Japan's avid importation of Western technology and popular culture in the early twentieth century. Comics and the Origins of Manga reveals how popular U.S. comics characters like Jiggs and Maggie, the Katzenjammer Kids, Felix the Cat, and Popeye achieved immense fame in Japan during the 1920s and 1930s. Modern comics had earlier developed in the United States in response to new technologies like motion pictures and sound recording, which revolutionized visual storytelling by prompting the invention of devices like speed lines and speech balloons. As audiovisual entertainment like movies and record players spread through Japan, comics followed suit. Their immediate popularity quickly encouraged Japanese editors and cartoonists to enthusiastically embrace the foreign medium and make it their own, paving the way for manga as we know it today. By challenging the conventional wisdom that manga evolved from centuries of prior Japanese art and explaining why manga and other comics around the world share the same origin story, Comics and the Origins of Manga offers a new understanding of this increasingly influential art form. --Rutgers University Press
