"This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. Violent conflict and its aftermath are pressing problems for international development. However, the results of development in conflict contexts have generally been disappointing and their preventative potential thus questionable. Lives After Violence argues that this is due to development practitioners adhering to an outdated and ineffective paradigm, which emphasises statebuilding, stabilisation and service delivery. Through detailed analysis of ten years of case studies and quantitative survey results from conflict-affected countries (Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nepal, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Uganda), this book offers original and generalisable conclusions about how lives in conflict work and upends the status quo of development practice in conflict settings by offering a set of new paradigms. These include the need to pay attention to the long-term effects of conflict on individual behaviour and decision-making, the social realities of economic life, the link between relationships and capacity and the role service delivery plays in negotiating the relationship between citizens and states in the aftermath of conflict. The book concludes with practical recommendations on how to apply and practice these new paradigms. "--

"The Huthi rebels in Yemen are a resistance movement going back decades. Their revolution against Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh in 2015 - and the subsequent proxy war between Iran, Saudi Arabia and the Huthis - has brought absolute devastation to the country. But who are the Huthis and how can we understand the group away from armed conflict and war? What has motivated their social movement to fundamentally re-shape Yemen, and what are the group's local and regional ambitions? This book provides the first comprehensive critical analysis dedicated to the Huthis. Across four parts and 17 chapters, the book examines how the movement is challenging traditional religious authority, re-shaping tribal values and roles in Yemen, constructing new collective memories and identities, and infusing Yemen's mediascape with their ideological creed. In examining the movement's specific ways of thinking and beliefs, the book also highlights its foreign policy within a regional policy of resistance to the United States, and it points towards what its impact on both Yemen and the security of the Arab Gulf region will be. The book brings together the leading experts on Yemen from diverse disciplines to provide readers with a nuanced and multi-layered approach to the understanding the Huthi movement"--

"'Memory Activism and Digital Practices after Conflict: Unwanted Memories' investigates the study of memory activism and memory of activism, emerging after conflict, as a political civic action. It examines the appearance and growth of memory activism in Serbia amid the legacies of unwanted memories of the wars of the 1990s, approaching the post-Yugoslav region as a region of memory and tracing the alternative calendars and alternative commemorative practices of memory activists as they have evolved over a period of more than two decades. By presenting in-depth accounts of memory activism practices, on-site and online, 'Memory Activism and Digital Practices after Conflict: Unwanted Memories' analyses this evolution in the context of generational belonging and introduces frameworks for the study of #hashtag #memoryactivism, alternative commemorations and commemorative solidarity"
