Abstract

"With its clear and conversational writing style, comprehensive coverage, and sophisticated presentation, "Marine Biology: Function, Biodiversity, Ecology", Sixth Edition, is regarded by many as the most authoritative marine biology text. Over the course of six editions, Jeffrey Levinton has balanced his organismal and ecological focus by including the latest developments on molecular biology, global climate change, and ocean processes."--

Abstract

"Elements of Marine Ecology", Fifth Edition, focuses on marine ecology as a coherent science, providing undergraduate students with an essential foundation of knowledge in the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems. The text reflects ecological groupings such as the pelagic lifestyle vs. the benthic lifestyle. In addition, background oceanographic material, previously in various chapters, is consolidated in the first chapter. The broad definition of ecology is the study of organisms in relation to their surroundings. This book presents marine ecology as a coherent science, providing undergraduate students with an essential foundation of knowledge in the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems. This new edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to meet the needs of today's courses and now includes worldwide examples, all thoroughly updated with brand new chapters.

Abstract

Abstract

This book represents the first monograph on the philosopher, economist and sociologist Emil Lederer (1882-1939). Director of the Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft und Sozialpolitik from 1922 to 1933, he was then forced to move to the United States to avoid persecution as a Jew (despite his conversion to Catholicism in 1908) and a socialist. There he became the Dean of the so-called 'University in Exile' at the New School for Social Research in New York. After sketching an updated picture of his intellectual biography and of the reception of his major works, the volume focuses on the issue of political order, and notably on the relationship between State and society. Before the outbreak of the First World War, Lederer was confident of being able to find a composition between State and the plurality of society, relying on the mediation skills of the middle classes. The First World War put in evidence certain contradictions of the modern liberal state that were intrinsic in its very origins; the State proves to be able to lose its connection with the structural plurality of society, becoming an abstract organisation, in Lederer's words rising definitively to the status of an 'abstract sovereignty'. This paves the way for the possibility of conceiving a political order no longer based on the connection between society and State, as in the liberal and constitutional tradition, but on a direct relationship between the leader and the masses. Such a relationship relies on the former's continuous ability to activate the emotions of the masses, and has no need for the internal reasoning typical of the dialectic between society and political institutions. According to Lederer, this will be the hallmark of the totalitarian State, analysed in his last, unfinished book, State of the masses (1939).

Abstract

The volume, dedicated to Marine Hugonnier (Paris, 1969), filmmaker and contemporary artist, presents a selection of works representative of her artistic approach since her beginnings in 1998. At the border between documentary and fiction, the work of Marine Hugonnier constitutes an exploration of the politics of the gaze. His works are an attempt to deconstruct the inherent complicity between the gaze and political ideologies. His work thus aims to question the cultural and political framework that conforms each point of view. His films, which can be described as experimental films or film essays, are sometimes associated with visual anthropology, his field of investigation being the space that separates the subject from his observer. She travelled a lot with her Aaton s16 mm camera on her shoulder, adopting the posture of the reporter and the ethnographer more than that of the artist, mixing images and genres. For Marine Hugonnier, producing images involves thinking about them. Cinema is conceived by the artist as a political act. A filmmaker above all, the artist also practices photography and creates works on paper. Her artistic research transversally addresses feminism, gender fluidity, anti-colonialism and issues related to the convergence between human and non-human. She tries to reconfigure the devices of capture and restitution of the cinema to build a new regime of images.

Abstract

Marine plastic pollution is threatening the potential of the blue economy in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Recognizing the urgent need to address this problem, the governments of Morocco and Tunisia decided to partner with the World Bank to address marine plastic pollution by taking circular economy approaches. Reducing marine plastic pollution makes socioeconomic sense. This report summarizes the experiences of Morocco and Tunisia to address marine plastic pollution and liberate their coastlines from plastics (Littoral Sans Plastique (LISP)) with the first phase of technical assistance by the Bank.
