Abstract

Das Buch präsentiert mit über 50 althochdeutschen und altsächsischen Texten nach Sachgebieten die gesamte, erstaunlich vielseitige Bandbreite der frühmittelalterlichen deutschen Prosa vom Ende des 8. bis zum Beginn des 12. Jahrhunderts: von der durchlaufenden Schultradition der Erschließung des Lateinischen durch Glossen und Glossare über die biblische und theologische Übersetzungsarbeit, über mannigfaltige Typen geistlicher Gebrauchstexte bis hin zum Rechts- und Verwaltungswesen, zur Naturkunde/Magie/Medizin. Den intellektuellen und sprachmächtigen Höhepunkt bietet die Gipfelleistung der zweisprachigen, lateinisch-deutschen Wissenschaftsprosa Notkers des Deutschen von St. Gallen (ca. 950 - 1022). Die meist kleinen Texte werden vollständig, die wenigen größeren in Auswahl nach den maßgeblichen Editionen wiedergegeben. Dabei wird jedoch aufgrund textanalytischer Überlegungen das Layout in größtmöglicher Übersichtlichkeit arrangiert. Die Übersetzungen der häufig zweisprachigen, lateinisch-deutschen Texte wollen nur Brücken zum Verständnis der Originale schlagen und streben deshalb für beide Sprachen weit gehende Wörtlichkeit an. Die knappen Kommentare legen im Anschluss an neuere aber auch ältere Forschung besonderen Wert auf die Beschreibung der Überlieferungsumstände der deutschen Texte im Kontext lateinischer Handschriften. Damit liegt ein wertvolles Textbuch für Lehrveranstaltungen zur althochdeutschen Literatur und zur Geschichte der deutschen Sprache vor. Abstract

This book examines the benefits of an Australian in-country study (ICS) in China programme and explores ways to maximise the short-term ICS experience in a multilingual space. The book employs an ecological perspective which has seldom been used to examine the study abroad context. It emphasises the importance of the space itself as an arena of interaction, belonging and power, where conduct and modes of communication are often regulated by political authorities and societal expectations. Specifically, the book focuses on the following: • the extent to which the ICS facilitated interaction in different settings • the way in which interaction during ICS contributed to language learning • the degree in which the interaction during ICS contributed to culture learning and • the role of identity in the learning process in the ICS. The main argument of the book is that while the ICS promoted multilingual learning space for in-class and out-of-class interactions, which further facilitated language and culture learning to a great extent, Australian students' identities and self-concepts also played a core mediating role throughout individual learning trajectories.

Abstract

This edited book brings together experts on the sociolinguistics of immigration with a focus on the Italo-Romance dialects. Sociolinguistic research on immigrant communities in Italy has widely studied the acquisition and use of Italian as L2 by first-generation immigrants, the maintenance of immigrant languages and code-switching between Italian and the immigrant languages. However, these studies have mostly ignored or neglected to investigate immigrant speakers' use of Italo- Romance dialects, their awareness of the sociolinguistic situation of majority and minority languages, and their attitudes towards them. Given the important role of Italo-Romance dialects in everyday communication and as a marker of regional identity, this book aims to fill this gap and understand more about the role that these languages play in the linguistic repertoire of immigrants. Abstract

This book tackles the interface between translation and pragmatics. It comprises case studies in English, Greek, Russian and Chinese translation practice, which highlight the potential of translation to interact with pragmatics and reshape meaning making in a target language in various pragmatically relevant ways. Fiction and non-fiction genres merge to suggest a rich inventory of interlingual transfer instances which can broaden our perception of what may be shifting in translation transfer. Authors use an emic approach (in addition to an etic one) to confirm results which they often present graphically. The book has a didactic perspective in that it shows how pragmatic awareness can regulate translator behaviour and is also useful in foreign language teaching, because it shows how important implicit knowledge can be, in shaping the message in a foreign language.

Abstract

This edited volume demonstrates the fundamental role translation and interpreting play in multilingual crises. During the COVID-19 pandemic, limited language proficiency of the main language(s) in which information is disseminated exposed people to additional risks, and the contributors analyse risk communication plans and strategies used throughout the world to communicate measures through translation and interpreting. Abstract

This book examines Transnational Chinese Language Education (TCLE) in the Australian context. Taking a post-monolingual perspective, the authors examine Chinese teachers' monolingual and multilingual practices and mindsets in their educational practices. They find that a Chinese-centric monolingual mindset dominates the Chinese teachers, while a multilingual mindset permeates in their classroom teaching, creating an unconscious tension between the two perspectives. The book proposes that it is the responsibility of teacher educators to train future Chinese teachers with an awareness of this issue, as well as suitable strategies to overcome it and be efficient language teachers. This book will be of interest to applied linguists, pre-service and in-service language teachers, as well as students and scholars of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL). This edited book explores stories of linguistic and spiritual identity in the urban and rural Australian landscape.
