L'ouvrage entend combler une lacune assez étonnante de l'édition française : il n'existait jusqu'à présent dans notre langue aucune anthologie des « Jeunes hégéliens », cette génération d'auteurs qui, dans les années 1840, ont bouleversé le paysage philosophique à coups d'articles publiés dans des revues plus ou moins confidentielles et dont le plus célèbre n'est autre que Karl Marx. Les textes de ces auteurs nous plongent dans l'atmosphère des quelques années, marquées par une effervescence comme il n'y en a qu'une fois par siècle, qui ont précédé et préparé la révolution de 1848 : dans un contexte d'intenses transferts intellectuels entre l'Allemagne et la France, on assiste à la formation et à la diffusion des principaux courants du progressisme politique (libéralisme, socialisme, communisme, anarchisme). De la critique de la religion à la critique de la société existante et de l'État, en passant par la critique de la philosophie elle-même, c'est un moment intellectuel capital pour l'histoire de la philosophie et pour l'histoire européenne tout court qui est désormais rendu accessible par cette réunion de textes d'auteurs aussi fameux que mal connus.

La Phénoménologie de l'esprit, parue en 1807, est un ouvrage singulier par son projet, sa forme, et la variété des sujets qu'il aborde. Il contient des développements célèbres concernant ce qu'on a appelé la « dialectique du maître et de l'esclave », la « conscience malheureuse » et la « belle âme », notamment.
