Nonlinear Control for Blood Glucose Regulation of Diabetic Patients: An LMI-Based Approach exposes readers to the various existing mathematical models that define the dynamics of glucose-insulin for Type 1 diabetes patients. After providing insights into the mathematical model of patients, the authors discuss the need and emergence of new control techniques that can lead to further development of an artificial pancreas. The book presents various nonlinear control techniques to address the challenges that Type 1 diabetic patients face in maintaining their blood glucose level in the safe range (70-180 mg/dl). The closed-loop solution provided by the artificial pancreas depends mainly on the effectiveness of the control algorithm, which acts as the brain of the system. APS control algorithms require a mathematical model of the gluco-regulatory system of the T1D patients for their design. Since the gluco-regulatory system is inherently nonlinear and largely affected by external disturbances and parametric uncertainty, developing an accurate model is very difficult.

Diabetes Without Needles: Non-invasive Diagnostics and Health Management provides a comprehensive and objective compilation of the most promising noninvasive methods for glucose monitoring, including an in-depth analysis of their advantages and disadvantages in terms of biochemical processes. The latest advances in the field are discussed, including methods such as optical measurements, electrochemical measurements, exhaled breath analysis, direct measurements of glucose in the blood using noninvasive techniques, and the indirect analysis of biomarkers that are related to the glycemia. The book's author also presents recommendations for future research directions in this field.

Insulin resistance is a key player in the pathology of cardiometabolic diseases - obesity, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, type 2 diabetes and NAFLD. These diseases are commonly associated with a peripheral insulin resistance, but an important role of insulin is played at brain circuitries that control food behaviour and autonomic activity. Brain insulin resistance is also associated with cognition impairment and Alzheimer Disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. Disruptions in diet composition, e.g. hypercaloric diets, and patterns, as well as nutritional status contribute to the genesis of insulin resistance. In contrast, hypocaloric diets, different feed regimens and some nutrients have beneficial impacts on insulin resistance and disease development. This special issue “Impact of diet composition on insulin resistance” is developed to compile studies that highlight the beneficial or deleterious impact of different nutritional plans on insulin sensitivity and metabolism and that unravel mechanistic links between diet composition and nutritional status and the development of insulin resistance, both periphery and centrally.

Recently, the attention paid to self-care tests and the easy and large screening of a high number of people has dramatically increased. Indeed, easy and affordable tools for the safe management of biological fluids together with self-diagnosis have emerged as compulsory requirements in this time of the COVID-19 pandemic, to lighten the pressure on public healthcare institutions and thus limiting the diffusion of infections. Obviously, other kinds of pathologies (cancer or other degenerative diseases) also continue to require attention, with progressively earlier and more widespread diagnoses. The contribution to the development of this research field comes from the areas of innovative plastic and 3D microfluidics, smart chemistry and the integration of miniaturized sensors, going in the direction of improving the performances of in vitro diagnostic (IVD) devices. In our Special Issue, we include papers describing easy strategies to identify diseases at the point-of-care and near-the-bed levels, but also dealing with innovative biomarkers, sample treatments, and chemistry processes which, in perspective, represent promising tools to be applied in the field.
