Abstract

"Human beings have been producing more twins, triplets, and quadruplets than ever before, due to the expansion of medically assisted conception. This book analyzes the anticipatory regimes of making multiple babies. With archival documents, participant observation, in-depth interviews, and registry data, this book traces the global and local governance of the assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) used to tackle multiple pregnancy since the 1970s, highlighting the early promotion of single embryo transfer in Belgium and Japan and the making of the world's most lenient guidelines in Taiwan"--

Abstract

A potential crisis in human fertility is brewing. As societies become more affluent, they experience changes that have a dramatic impact on reproduction. As average family sizes fall, the selection pressure for high-fertility genes decreases; exacerbated by the IVF industry which allows infertility-linked genes to pass into the next generation. Male fertility rates are low, for many reasons including genetics and exposure to environmental toxins. So, a perfect storm of factors is contriving to drive fertility rates down at unprecedented rates. If we do not recognize the reality of our situation and react accordingly, an uncontrollable decline in population numbers is likely, which we'll be unable to reverse. This book will address, in a unique and multi-faceted way, how the consequences of modern life affects fertility, so that we can consider behavioural, social, medical and environmental changes which could reduce the severity of what is about to come.

Abstract

Ovarian stimulation is the starting point of reproductive medicine but the procedure can result in adverse reactions particularly the dangerous ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. Fully revised in line with modern practice of ovarian stimulation, this new edition is divided into six sections that cover mild forms, non-conventional forms, IVF, complications and their management, alternatives, and the practicalities of procedures. All aspects of ovarian stimulation are discussed including the different stimulation protocols from which to choose, the management of poor responders and hyper-responders, as well as stimulation in patients with PCOS. Comprehensively reviewing the modern approach to ovarian stimulation, the alternative procedures are also described, both in IVF and other methods of assisted reproduction. Written by leading experts on reproductive health and fertility, this book will assist infertility specialists, gynecologists, reproductive endocrinologists and radiologists in determining successful treatment for their patients.

Abstract

"Ovarian stimulation aims at the development of one or more of the ovarian follicles to reach the stage of maturity culminating in the release of one or more mature oocytes ready for fertilization. Ovarian follicular development is under the control of local factors inside the ovaries (most of it is poorly understood), as well as hormones produced from extraovarian sources, mainly pituitary gonadotropins. Other hormones may play a role in ovarian follicular development; the extent and details of such a role are not fully understood"--

Abstract

The biodiversity of agro-ecosystems in Europe is declining with the intensification of agriculture and the abandonment of land. Agro-environmental and climate measures (MAEC) are nowadays an important tool for environmental protection, conservation of animal and plant species, and maintenance of landscapes in agricultural areas. The objective of this study was to investigate a compromise between farmers and ecologists through the comparison of two MAEC measures ("P3B", which authorises the application of 50 kg N/ha, and "P4B", which prohibits the use of all fertilising materials) for the preservation of biodiversity in high biological value grasslands in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The problem of the study is therefore the following: what is the impact of a 50 kg N/ha input on the conservation status of biodiversity in high biological value grasslands? To answer this question, an experiment was carried out on 21 plots belonging to habitat 6510 in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The samples taken from the high biological value grasslands were freeze-dried and then ground. They were then analysed by the near infrared spectrometry (NIRS) method to determine their chemical composition, and by the butanol-HCl method to determine their condensed tannin content. The results show that the dose of 50 kg N/ha does not allow a significant variation in the floristic composition between the fertilized and non-fertilized quadrats. However, the application of this dose of fertiliser and the type of soil allowed a significant variation in biomass yield between the fertilised and non-fertilised quadrats. In conclusion, the P3B measure, which results in an input of 50 kg N/ha, can be recommended to farmers to increase their biomass yield without impacting the conservation status of the biodiversity of their grassland.

Abstract

"A provocative examination of reproductive technologies that questions our understanding of fertility, motherhood, and the female body Since the world's first test-tube baby was born in 1978, in vitro fertilization has made the unimaginable possible for millions of people. Yet today, the revolutionary potential of babies in bottles remains unrealized. Fertility centers continue to reinforce conservative norms of motherhood and family, and infertility remains a deeply emotional experience many women are reluctant to discuss. In this vivid and incisive personal and cultural history, Jenni Quilter explores what it is like to be one of those women, both the site of a bold experiment and a potential mother caught between fearing and yearning. Quilter observes her own experience with the eye of a critic, recounting the pleasures and pains of objectification: how medicine mediates between women and their bodies, how marketing redefines pregnancy and early parenthood as a set of products, how we celebrate the "natural" and denigrate the artificial. With nuance, empathy, and a fierce intellect, Quilter asks urgent questions about what it means to desire a child and how much freedom reproductive technologies actually offer. Her writing embraces the complexities of motherhood and the humanity of IVF: the waiting rooms, the message boards, and the genetic permutations-egg donation, sperm donation, embryo donation-of what a thoroughly modern family might mean"--

Abstract

Linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) is a numerous outlets crop (industry, human and animals feeding, …). However, it is not much cultivated in Belgium. Technical references on this subject are few.In order to advise farmers and other stakeholders on winter linseed in Belgium, trials on micro-plots were established in Lonzée (Belgium). Those trials studied ten varieties, six nitrogen fertilization modalities and five weeding modalities. The goal was to study different elements of the cultural itinerary to be able to optimize them. The varieties trial enabled to highlight different correlations between measured variables (density, foliar symptoms, yield…). Afterwards, four distinct groups of varieties were differentiated. Each of these is characterised by its own characteristics. This analysis allows to distinguish varieties which are the most suitable for the Belgian territory. The fertilization trial confirmed that linseed crop needs little nitrogen fertilization. A little nitrogen input like 50 kgN/ha enabled to distinguished in terms of yield from unfertilized modality. Little nitrogen input wasn’t significantly different from 110 kgN/ha modality. These conclusions are however dependant to annual climate conditions. The weeding trial highlighted the efficiency of chemical weeding and mixed weeding in winter linseed crop. This trial also showed the limits of mechanical weeding. Many studies are still to be carried out on this subject to draw relevant conclusions in the long- term.

Abstract

This book offers a vision of politics that govern the womb; from antiquity ('be fertile and replenish the earth'), through the ages (hysterectomy, to extirpate women's 'hysteria'), up to the present time (abortion wars; assisted reproduction), and into the future (reprogenetics; the artificial womb). It explores how the womb has served humanity, either tacitly or explicitly, through the ages and examines how women have accepted and still perceive the rules created by men as natural - including the new anti-abortion laws in the USA - because 'that is the way things are.' The book also explores how the merging of assisted reproduction technologies and novel genetic tools (reprogenetics) will pose additional challenges to womb bearers, as all women will be made to reproduce with IVF. What is more, the advent of the artificial womb is in sight; the gender and social implications of this development would be enormous. Certainly not just another organ, the womb has been and remains a powerful tool that cannot be left to the decisions of half of the population. This book engages a wide audience, including women and men, professionals and laypersons who are interested in gender, politics, legislation, women's health, and ethics.
