In 1995 startte het Centrum voor Filantropische Studies aan de Vrije Universiteit het onderzoek Geven in Nederland, dat sindsdien elke twee jaar verschijnt. In deze dertiende editie van 'Geven in Nederland' worden de bijdragen van huishoudens, individuen, fondsen, bedrijven en goededoelenloterijen in kaart gebracht. Nederlanders beperken zich niet alleen tot het geven van geld maar verrichten ook vrijwilligerswerk op vele maatschappelijke terreinen. 'Geven in Nederland' geeft antwoord op de volgende vragen: Hoe vrijgevig is Nederland? Wie geeft aan welke doelen? Hoe heeft het geefgedrag zich de laatste 25 jaar ontwikkeld? 'Geven in Nederland' draagt bij aan de zichtbaarheid van maatschappelijk initiatief in Nederland ... Dat is belangrijk ter legitimatie van een zelfstandige en snel groeiende sector.

"The practice of philanthropy, which generously releases private property for public purposes, represents in many ways the best angels of our nature. But this practice's noteworthy virtues often blind us to the exercises of private power that it represents. The Tyranny of Generosity argues that this private power threatens foundations of a democratic society. The deployment of private wealth for public ends rivals the authority of communities to determine their own affairs. And, in societies characterized by wide disparities in wealth, philanthropy combines with background inequalities to make public decisions overwhelmingly sensitive to the preferences of the rich. Allowing private wealth to control social outcomes collides with core commitments of a democratic society, a society in which persons are supposed to determine their common affairs together, on equal terms. But why exactly is democracy valuable? How should these values be weighed against the liberty of donors and the many social benefits that philanthropy promises? The Tyranny of Generosity explores these questions by applying tools of political philosophy to various topics in the practice of philanthropy: the respective roles of philanthropy and government, public subsidies for private giving, the use of donations for political speech, instruments of perpetual giving, the proliferation of giving by commercial corporations, and "effective altruism" as a guide for individual giving. These studies build to a surprising conclusion: realizing the democratic ideal may be impossible without philanthropy-but making philanthropy safe for democracy also requires radical changes to policy and practice"--

Reconstituer un parcours généalogique et historique individuel ou familial demande parfois d'explorer les archives hospitalières ou de la bienfaisance. Or les chercheurs ou les généalogistes se trouvent souvent démunis face à ces fonds qu'ils connaissent mal. L'ouvrage les guide pas à pas. Depuis leur création au XVIIe siècle, les hôpitaux généraux ou hospices ont accueilli autant les malades que les indigents. Leurs archives, qui lient pauvreté et maladie d’une façon qui nous est inhabituelle aujourd’hui, constituent la principale source documentaire retraçant les parcours de ces deux populations à travers celles et ceux qui y ont séjourné. D’autres documents permettent de mieux connaître la situation médicale et sociale d’une personne ou d’une famille : les fonds des bureaux de bienfaisance ou d’hygiène par exemple, ou des sources plus insolites comme la presse. Pour orienter ses recherches au mieux, il est souvent nécessaire de tenir compte des particularités de la situation du malade ou de l’indigent : pathologie, âge, origine… Tous ces aspects sont présentés dans ce livre. Il guide ainsi les chercheurs dans le dédale des fonds susceptibles de leur fournir des informations sociales ou médicales précises sur leurs ancêtres.
