Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Exploring different, interrelated roles for the architect and researcher. The practice of architecture manifests in myriad forms and engagements. Overcoming false divides, this volume frames the fertile relationship between the cultural and scholarly production of academia and the process of designing and building in the material world. It proposes the concept of the hybrid practitioner, who bridges the gap between academia and practice by considering how different aspects of architectural practice, theory, and history intersect, opening up a fascinating array of possibilities for an active engagement with the present. The book explores different, interrelated roles for practicing architects and researchers, from the reproductive activities of teaching, consulting and publishing, through the reflective activities of drawing and writing, to the practice of building. The notion of the hybrid practitioner will appeal strongly to students, teachers and architectural practitioners as part of a multifaceted professional environment. By connecting academic interests with those of the professional realm, The Hybrid Practitioner addresses a wider readership embracing landscape design, art theory and aesthetics, European history, and the history and sociology of professions.

Abstract

"This book offers an ethnographic exploration of the role that atmosphere plays in work processes undertaken within an urban design studio. It provides understandings of how architectural practices are fueled with atmosphere in various configurations throughout different design phases of selected projects for construction. From the outside architectural practices commonly appear well-ordered and carefully considered, established by proof and rationally justified. This book though poaches on architects' preserves in order to draw attention to features of unpredictability and uncertainty within the design phases. By opening up into the 'machinery room' of urban designers the goal is not to spoil the plaster saint cover of a 'starchitect' business, but to remind about the crucial value that pockets of doubt issuing questions rather than answers, open-mindedness instead of single-mindedness, play to the processes of design production and creativity. The book identifies these pockets as atmospheres enveloping the architectural practice"--

Abstract

BIG is an internationally operating creative group of architects, designers, urban and landscape planners, interior and product designers, researchers and inventors. The architecture of BIG is created on the basis of an observation of the environment and is suitable for a contemporary form of living. The secret of their architecture lies in the combination of utopia and pragmatism. This monograph shows how this can work. From small projects to a gigantic housing block, from urban space to museum - everything that makes urban architecture fascinating is included. This monograph presents 19 exciting projects from BIG's creative workshop. It invites to a new experience of architecture.

Abstract

Abstract

A selection of twenty works that reflect the intellectual maturity and constructive precision of the Zurich-based studio. Despite the scarce geographic variety (only two of the buildings featured are outside of Switzerland), the projects published on these pages address a wide range of programs, from schools to sport centers and headquarters for newspapers, foundations or factories via single-family houses, apartment buildings, mixed-use blocks and even a police station. This body of works follows a presentation by Luis Fernández-Galiano and essays by Philip Ursprung and by the founding partners of the studio.

Abstract

"This new edition of Collaborations in Architecture and Engineering explores how to effectively develop creative collaborations among architects and engineers. The authors, an architect and an engineer, share insights gained from their experiences and research on fostering productive communication, engaging in interdisciplinary discussions, and establishing common design goals. Together, they share the tools, methods, and best practices deployed by prominent innovative architects and engineers to provide readers with the key elements for success in interdisciplinary design collaborations. The book offers engaging stories about prominent architect and engineer collaborations--such as those between SANAA and Sasaki and Partners, Adjaye Associates and Silman, Grafton Architects and AKT II, Studio Gang and Arup, Foster + Partners and Buro Happold, Steven Holl Architects and Guy Nordenson and Associates, and among the engineers and architects at SOM. In the second edition, the newly added case studies showcase extraordinary buildings across the globe at a range of scales and typologies, tracing the facets of high-quality collaborations. Through the examples of these remarkable synergies, readers gain insights into innovative design processes that address complex challenges in the built environment. The second edition of Collaborations in Architecture and Engineering is a terrific sourcebook for students, educators and professionals interested in integrative design practice among the disciplines" [Publisher]
