Abstract

Der Band fokussiert virtuelle Architekturen als bildhafte Räume und begehbare Bilder und lotet damit sowohl ihre ästhetischen als auch performativ-praktischen Potenziale aus. Virtuelle Räume bestimmen unsere Kultur heute bereits mehr, als uns bewusst ist. Wir betreten sie sowohl zur Unterhaltung, beim Spielen und Lernen, als auch in der Architektur und in industriellen Arbeitsprozessen. Inzwischen nehmen sie in der Forschung ebenfalls eine wachsende Rolle ein. Zugleich steht eine kritisch reflektierende Beschäftigung mit der Ästhetik der simulierten Bildräume, den Prämissen ihres Entstehens und den von ihnen ausgehenden Handlungsangeboten noch weitgehend aus. Zwölf Beiträge aus angewandten Bereichen in Forschung und Technik, experimentellen Ansätzen in Architektur, Kunst und Theater sowie aus theoretisch-historischer Perspektive geben erhellende Einblicke in den kulturell und gesellschaftlich zunehmend bedeutsamen Bereich digitaler Raumkonzepte und virtueller Realitäten.

Abstract

Robots, avatars, acteurs virtuels et autres entités intelligentes sont sortis des laboratoires pour se répandre et s'immiscer jusqu'au coeur de nos activités artistiques. Des artistes audacieux ont adopté ces êtres artificiels pour prolonger et renouveler, à côté de la traditionnelle famille des ± arts vivants naturels ?, la famille moins connue, mais aussi ancienne, des ± arts vivants artificiels ?. L'auteur invite son lecteur à un voyage temporel de plus de deux milliers d'années afin de retracer la genèse de ces productions, depuis les automates, et des techniques qui leur sont associées. Il analyse comment les artistes d'aujourd'hui se sont saisis de ces artefacts pour en faire des créations en résonance avec notre temps. Les arts vivants artificiels, tout en nous offrant toujours de précieux plaisirs, nous préparent à vivre désormais en bonne compagnie avec ces entités qui nous renvoient notre image et nous obligent à redéfinir notre humanité.

Abstract

"This book offers new ways of thinking about and assessing the impact of virtual reality on its users. It argues that we must go beyond traditional psychological concepts of VR "presence" to better understand the many varieties of virtual experiences. The author provides compelling evidence that VR simulations are capable of producing "virtually real" experiences in people. He also provides a framework for understanding when and how simulations induce virtually real experiences. From these insights, the book shows that virtually real experiences are responsible for several unaddressed ethical issues in VR research and design. Experimental philosophers, moral psychologists, and institutional review boards must become sensitive to the ethical issues involved between designing "realistic" virtual dilemmas, for good data collection, and avoiding virtually real trauma. Ethicists and game designers must do more to ensure that their simulations don't inculcate harmful character traits. Virtually real experiences, the author claims, can make virtual relationships meaningful, productive, and conducive to welfare but they can also be used to systematically mislead and manipulate users about the nature of their experiences. The Ethics of Virtual and Augmented Reality will appeal to philosophers working in applied ethics, philosophy of technology, and aesthetics, as well as researchers and students interested in game studies and game design"--
