The Irish nana is a repository of family history, memory and lore. Alice celebrates her own nanas, part of the generation born after the Great Famine. She herself is now a nana too, and explores the old and the new, the 'then' and 'now', the nana of yesteryear and of today, with her characteristic empathy and love.

"One morning, Tophs, Taylor Harris's round-cheeked, lively twenty-two-month-old, wakes up listless and unresponsive. At the hospital, her maternal instincts are confirmed: something is wrong with her boy, and Taylor's life will never be the same. With every question the doctors answer about Tophs's increasingly troubling symptoms, more arise, and Taylor dives into the search for a diagnosis. This is a stirring and radiantly written examination of the bond between mother and child, full of hard-won insights about fighting for and finding meaning when nothing goes as expected."--Book jacket.

"The philosopher Charles Taylor argues in A Secular Age (2007) that secular cultures are losing the capacity to experience genuine "fullness," by which he means the experience of a transcendent reality. Inspired by this idea of fulness, Daniel Hendrickson has developed three specific ways of sharing with students and others which he calls "pedagogies of fullness:" study, solidarity, and grace. These are his terms for higher educational strategies emerging out of the Renaissance humanist tradition of Jesuit education. They facilitate human, relational contacts that make fullness, and, hence, meaning and purpose, possible. According to Hendrickson, study, solidarity, and grace counter contemporary forces of individualism, nihilism, rationalism, and relativism with alternative ways of knowing and relating. Hendrickson argues that Jesuit higher education has the opportunity to restore fullness in our resolutely secular age by developing these pedagogies. Moreover, the book poses a challenge to Jesuit higher education in the twenty-first-century to better realize the origins and history of its own tradition. A Jesuit university, according to the author, can be assessed as to how it knows and lives fundamental tenets of its tradition, as well as according to how it recognizes and responds to contemporary problematic cultural conditions. For Hendrickson, Taylor's work gives Ignatian and Jesuit education a contemporary philosophical backdrop against which to be seen"--

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jack Miles and Mark C. Taylor embarked on an extended conversation about living and dying in an imperiled world. A Friendship in Twilight is their plague journal. In raw and searching letters, written daily from the first lockdowns through the Capitol riot, they reflect on life during overlapping crises.

"CaShawn Thompson crafted Black Girls Are Magic as a proclamation of Black women's resilience in 2013. Less than five years later, it had been repurposed as a gateway to an attractive niche market. Branding Black Womanhood: Media Citizenship from Black Power to Black Girl Magic examines the commercial infrastructure that absorbed Thompson's mantra. While the terminology may have changed over the years, mainstream brands and mass media companies have consistently sought to acknowledge Black women's possession of a distinct magic or power when it suits their profit agendas. Beginning with the inception of the Essence brand in the late 1960s, Timeka N. Tounsel examines the individuals and institutions that have reconfigured Black women's empowerment as a business enterprise. Ultimately, these commercial gatekeepers have constructed an image economy that operates as both a sacred space for Black women and an easy hunting ground for their dollars"--

This book introduces novel results on mathematical modelling, parameter identification, and automatic control for a wide range of applications of mechanical, electric, and mechatronic systems, where undesirable oscillations or vibrations are manifested. The six chapters of the book written by experts from international scientific community cover a wide range of interesting research topics related to: algebraic identification of rotordynamic parameters in rotor-bearing system using finite element models; model predictive control for active automotive suspension systems by means of hydraulic actuators; model-free data-driven-based control for a Voltage Source Converter-based Static Synchronous Compensator to improve the dynamic power grid performance under transient scenarios; an exact elasto-dynamics theory for bending vibrations for a class of flexible structures; motion profile tracking control and vibrating disturbance suppression for quadrotor aerial vehicles using artificial neural networks and particle swarm optimization; and multiple adaptive controllers based on B-Spline artificial neural networks for regulation and attenuation of low frequency oscillations for large-scale power systems. The book is addressed for both academic and industrial researchers and practitioners, as well as for postgraduate and undergraduate engineering students and other experts in a wide variety of disciplines seeking to know more about the advances and trends in mathematical modelling, control and identification of engineering systems in which undesirable oscillations or vibrations could be presented during their operation.
