Abstract

In unprecedented detail, Leslie Choquette narrates the peopling of French Canada across the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the lesser known colonial phase of French migration. Drawing on French and Canadian archives, she carefully traces the precise origins of individual immigrants, describing them by gender, class, occupation, region, religion, age, and date of departure. Her archival work is impressive: of the more than 30,000 emigrants who embarked for Quebec and the Maritimes during the French Regime, nearly 16,000 are chronicled here. In considering the pattern of emigration in the context of migration history, Choquette shows that, in many ways, the movement toward Canada occurred as a byproduct of other, perennial movements, such as the rural exodus or interurban labor migrations. Overall, emigrants to Canada belonged to an outwardly turned and mobile sector of French society, and their migration took place during a phase of vigorous Atlantic expansion. They crossed the ocean to establish a subsistence economy and peasant society, traces of which lingered on into the twentieth century. Because Choquette looks at the entire history of French migration to Canada—its social and economic aspects as well as its place in the larger history of migration—her work makes a remarkable contribution in the field of immigration history.

Abstract

Explores how the topic of 'youth' has inspired Francophone filmmakers to explore and reinvent common tropes associated with young peopleYouth has been represented on screen for decades and has informed many directors’ visual, narrative and social perspectives, but there has not been a body of work addressing the richness and complexity of this topic in a French and Francophone context. This volume offers new insights into the works of emerging and well-established directors alike, who all chose to place youth at the heart of their narrative and aesthetic concerns. Showing how the topic of ‘youth’ has inspired filmmakers to explore and reinvent common tropes associated with young people, the book also addresses how the representation of youth can be used to mirror the tensions – political, social, religious, economic or cultural – that agitate a society at a given time in its history.Key featuresDeals with contemporary issues such as LGBTQ identities, terrorism or social tensions and inequities in French and Francophone societiesPresents significant filmmakers whose work has rarely been discussed in an academic settingIntroduces the works of emerging directors and/or prominent directors from Francophone countriesGathers academics from different fields, offering a multi-faceted approach to the topic of youth in filmContributorsKarine Chevalier, University of Roehampton, LondonJuliette Feyel, University of Paris-NanterreFiona Handyside, University of ExeterMaria Flood, Keele UniversityAubrey Korneta, Sarah Lawrence College Kathryn Chaffee, University of California, Los AngelesBen McCann, University of AdelaideEricka Knudson, Harvard UniversityGemma Edney, University of ExeterElizabeth Geary Keohane, University of GlasgowJocelyn Wright, University of Texas - AustinWalter S. Abstract

Patrons have long appeared as colorful, exceptional figures in music history, but this book recasts patrons and patronage as creative forces that shaped the sounds and meanings of new French music between the world wars. Far from mere sources of funding, early twentieth-century patrons collaborated closely with composers, treating commissions for new music as opportunities to express their own artistry. Patrons developed new pathways to participate in music-making, going beyond commissions to establish ballet companies, manage performance venues, and establish state programs. The impressive variety of patronage activities led to an explosion of new music as well as new styles and -isms, indelibly marking the repertoire that this book examines, including a number of pieces frequently heard in concert halls today. In addition to offering new perspectives on well-known French repertoire, this book challenges conceptions of patronage as a bygone phenomenon. Complementing a dwindling cast of aristocratic patrons were new ranks of music publishers, impresarios, state bureaucrats, opera directors, and others capitalizing on their savings, social connections, and artistic vision to bring new music into the world. In chapters on French discourse around patronage, aristocratic commissions, the stimulus provided by the interwar dance craze, music publishing, the Paris Opéra, state intervention in French musical life, and transatlantic musical exchanges, the book blends cultural history with primary source study and music analysis. It not only improves our understanding of French musical life and culture during the early twentieth century but also supplies us with essential insights into the ways modern music emerged at the intersection of music composition, aesthetic and national politics, and the creative labor of patrons.

Abstract

"This book is a collection of thirteen essays culled from the several books and hundreds of articles I have published and lectures I have given over the years (nearly fifty of them) on the life and work of Hector Berlioz. Organized in a chronological order determined by the essential subject matter of each essay, the book treats in detail some of composer's individual works (the Symphonie fantastique, the Symphonie funebre et triomphale, Les Nuits d'ete, La Mort d'Ophelie, Les Troyens, Beatrice et Benedict), some of the composer's relationships with his most famous contemporaries (Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner), some of the composer's most important concerns (his quest for an administrative position; his travels abroad; his fascination with English literature), the composer's most important book (Les Memoires d'Hector Berlioz), and some of his most important critics (from shortly after his death, from the twentieth century, and from the early part of the present century). In a brief Prelude, I explain the origins of the book, aspects of my career as a Berliozian, the main theme of much of my research ("politics," loosely defined), and some of the particular concerns to be treated in the texts that follow. In a brief Postlude, I treat the work of Berlioz's important critics based in part on an article of mine that appeared only in French; and I conclude with a note on the current state of Berlioz studies and some thoughts on the needs for the immediate future. Although this is essentially a collection of previously published material, it is my intention seriously to revise it in such a way as to avoid needless repetition over the course of the thirteen chapters, to bring up to date not every last detail but certain crucial matters, and to correct a number of errors and oversights. The material previously published in French and German will, in English, be entirely new"--

Abstract

Abstract

How does authority become power? How does power justify itself to achieve its ends? For over two hundred years, the Valois kings relied on a complex mixture of ideologies, ruling a monarchical commonwealth with a coherent theory of shared governance. Forged in the Hundred Years War, this commonwealth built on the defense of the public good (bien public) came undone both practically and theoretically during the Wars of Religion. Just as certain kings sought to expand the royal prerogative, so, too, elites fought to preserve their control over local government. Using town archives from more than twenty cities to complement traditional sources of political theory, The French Monarchical Commonwealth, 1356-1560 establishes the relationship between seemingly theoretical constructs, like the Salic Law, and the reality of everyday politics.

Abstract

"The centralizing monarchical discourse has long dominated our perception of the kingdom of France. Jacques Krynen, Jean Barbey, Arlette Jouanna, and many others have traced the evolution of this discourse between the 14th and 17th centuries, when, in their view, it led to a Bourbon monarchy whose relationship to the concept "absolute" differed substantially in their presentations.1 Jouanna has added important correctives to this narrative, both in her insistence on the importance of a noble ideology of resistance and in her careful presentation of "puissance absolue" as an "extraordinary weapon" [arme extraordinaire] in the sixteenth century.2 As she rightly emphasizes, "absolu(e)" took on a new meaning in the seventeenth century, and we must avoid the temptation to view early sixteenth-century developments as the germ of what happened in the middle of the seventeenth century.3"--

Abstract
