Abstract

This volume explores detailed methods to investigate various aspects of biology related to cell polarity, or asymmetry within a cell. Molecular, cellular, and tissue-level regulation and function as well as diseases caused by impairment of cell polarity are explored by these methods. Beginning with advanced imaging and biochemical methods, the book continues with planar cell polarity (PCP) signaling in morphogenesis in diverse developmental contexts, apicobasal (AB) cell polarity in development and diseases, as well as directional cell migration and biomechanics in cell polarity. The collection includes the usage of a wide variety of model systems and an extensive array of techniques, including genetic, imaging, biochemical, and biomechanical. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and comprehensive, Cell Polarity Signaling: Methods and Protocols aims to enable researchers to delve into the stimulating field of cell polarity and contribute to our understanding of how coordinated control of protein stability, trafficking, membrane retention, post-translational modification, and dynamic organization leads to active regulation of cell polarity. Abstract

Abstract

The human world is alive with different sorts of goods - the multifarious things we all see as worth achieving or celebrating by our action and in our living. Timothy Chappell argues that we can't live well, still less think well about ethics, if we don't properly understand these issues. Venturing into new ground, he surveys the central topics in philosophy, providing an historical and philosophical map of the major themes. From utilitarianism, Kantianism, virtue ethics, personal identity, Parfitian reductionism, animals, abortion and euthanasia, to free will and the meaning of life itself, he takes us on an original and thought-provoking journey through ethics.

Abstract

The Myth of Evil explores a contradiction: the belief that human beings cannot commit acts of pure evil, that they cannot inflict harm for its own sake, and the evidence that pure 'evil' truly is a human capacity. Acts of horror are committed not by inhuman 'monsters', but by ordinary human beings. This contradiction is clearest in the apparently 'extreme' acts of war criminals, terrorists, serial murderers, sex offenders and children who kill. Phillip Cole delves deep into our two, cosily established approaches to evil. There is the traditional approach where evil is a force which creates mo

Abstract

How can works of the imagination help us to understand good and evil in the modern world? In this new collection of essays, Alex Danchev treats the artist as a crucial moral witness of our troubled times, and puts art to work in the service of political and ethical inquiry.
