Abstract

Abiotic stresses negatively affect crop production and thus threaten global food security. To confront this challenge, it is important to understand the physiological processes and functional cues of seeds, particularly in the field of seed development (seed filling), and its influence on seed dormancy and germination. This book presents a comprehensive overview of seed physiology and the effects of stressors such as salinity, drought, and high temperature. It also discusses the genetic mechanisms and biochemical and physiological cues that govern seed filling, seed development features under stress environments, seed dormancy and germination, and agronomic management to help crops develop resilience to climate change.

Abstract

Sturkie's Avian Physiology, Seventh Edition is the classic, comprehensive, single volume on the physiology of domestic and wild birds. This latest edition is thoroughly revised and updated with several new chapters with entirely new content on such topics as vision, sensory taste, pain reception, evolution and domestication. Chapters throughout have been greatly expanded due to the many recent advances in the field. This book is written by international experts in different aspects of avian physiology. For easy reading and searches, the book is structured under a series of themes, beginning with genomic studies, sensory biology and nervous systems, and major organs. This book is an important resource for ornithologists, poultry scientists, and other researchers in avian studies. It is also useful for students in avian or poultry physiology, as well as avian veterinarians. Stands out as the only single volume devoted to bird physiology Features updates, revisions or additions to each chapter Written and edited by international leaders in avian studies.

Abstract

Cyanobacterial Physiology presents foundational knowledge alongside the most recent advances in cyanobacterial biology. The title examines the challenges of industrial application through an understanding of the basic molecular machinery of cyanobacteria. Sixteen chapters are organized into three sections. The first part covers basic cyanobacterial biology, emphasizing environmental biology such as photosynthesis, nitrogen fixation, circadian rhythm, and programmed cell death. The second part includes the chapters that discuss cyanobacterial extremophiles, adaptations, secondary metabolites, osmoprotectants, and toxins. The third part covers aspects of cyanobacterial application that are based on environmental biology. Leading scientists contribute chapters on cyanobacteria.

Abstract

As editors of this book our aim was to collect new data from experienced authors in order to further advance the knowledge on the protective effects of polyphenols' intake, e.g., when included in the human diet, to modulate cellular functions and pathways associated with neurodegenerative diseases.Fruits and vegetables are the richest source of polyphenols in the regular human diet. Most of these molecules possess high antioxidant capacity, as well as several other important activities that can affect human health, among which anti-inflammatory properties and the potential ability to modulate different cell-signalling pathways seem to be the most important. Neurodegenerative diseases are among the main causes of death worldwide and, in most of them like Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, neurodegeneration occurs long before the onset of first symptoms, where a large population of brain neurons are already lost. Besides neurons, glial cells like astrocytes and microglia, are involved in oxidative and neuroinflammatory pathological pathways, making them interesting targets for neuroprotective strategies. Polyphenols are promising candidates for those strategies, either as prophylactic substances or as therapeutic molecules. In this book, several research papers and two reviews explore the chemical properties of naturally occurring polyphenols and some new possibilities for the therapeutical and/or prophylactic roles of these molecules on neurodegeneration and neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract

Title in English: Posture and muscle imbalances in children aged 6-8 years: case study The monograph focuses on the posture of children aged 6-8, specifically on the period before they enter the primary school and on the first two years of schooling. In six case studies, we focus on the quality of posture, the functional state of selected muscles and muscle groups of the monitored children and their physical activity regime. In order to examine the musculoskeletal system, we use visual methods and functional muscle test by Janda, and we also use observation, interview, questionnaire survey and other methods. The findings of the original research provide detailed knowledge regarding posture, the state of the musculoskeletal system and the locomotor regime of children at school and outside, which partly differ from other authors' findings. K vyšetření podpůrně pohybového systému využíváme pohledových metod a funkčního svalového testu podle Jandy, a dále používáme pozorování, rozhovor, dotazníkové šetření a další metody. Výsledky původního výzkumu přinášejí podrobné poznatky o držení těla, stavu pohybového aparátu a o pohybovém režimu dětí ve škole i mimo ni, které se z části odlišují od výsledků jiných autorů.
