Abstract

This timely book explores economic, political, social, and cultural impacts of the COVID-19. It aims to reveal a future world shaped by the worldwide pandemic. The main content of this book is divided into 5 parts: the pandemic-a short sketch of the pandemic through 2020, the acceleration of the global power transition: from East to West, comparison between authoritarian and democratic in the pandemic era, global international organizations under the COVID-19 influence, and regional international organizations under the COVID-19 influence. In addition, this book also analyzes the impacts from two aspects: the changes of the world order and the repercussions for international organizations and globalization. Three questions will be focused: How the pandemic has changed the existing world order? What the new post-pandemic world order will be? How international cooperation has been affected and will be affected? This book is a comprehensive study that investigates the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the political implication on international organizations. It would not only inspire readers to think about impacts of the outbreak of COVID-19 from economic and political perspectives, but also encourage readers to have a deeper understanding of the global political pattern and potential changes of world order after the pandemic. Therefore, the intended readership not only includes the academics but also includes pro-academics. The academic audiences include university and college scholars (especially those majoring in history, political sciences, economics, and international relations), teachers, and administrative staff at the undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. levels, as well as study centers and research institutes and campus and public libraries. The pro-academic groups include civil servants, especially scholarly bureaucrats and technocrats; white collar and middle-class citizens interested in reading, especially those interested in and concerned about current affairs; and international business elites. The most important feature of this book is that it points out the COVID-19 pandemic has been shaping the world order. It also shows in the coming post-pandemic world, the United States would maintain the position of superpower while the still rising China is likely to share some responsibilities in constructing a new multi-polar world with US and other powers. The prevailing of unilateralism will heavily constrain the role of international organizations.

Abstract

This book presents a fresh and original contribution to the debate on the policies and technologies needed to achieve a Greener Defence. It provides an overall and comprehensive analysis of the current state and future prospects of the public and private discourse on the matter, by leveraging on four different and complementary perspectives: the national experiences of relevant NATO Member States and Partner Countries, the institutional framework of International Organizations, the role of industry and private companies and the intellectual contribution of research centers and academia. It will provide new policy recommendations and advanced and innovative technological solutions to be implemented in order to reduce the environmental footprint of Armed Forces, while improving at the same time the energy efficiency and strengthening the operational capabilities of Militaries. The book is addressed to all those interested in studying the connections between climate change, environmental issues, energy security and the role of Armed Forces, the latter seen as an important actor for reducing the environmental impact of human activities and as a forum where to discuss and implement new green technological solutions and applications.

Abstract

The shift from response to recovery is now noticeable as the world moves past the paralyzing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This book explores responses to the pandemic by international, regional, and local institutions, multilateral action, and crisis prevention efforts at different levels of governance, with a specific focus on the situation of women and children. The contributions in this volume address novel topics and expand the analysis to the different challenges faced by women and children, linking these to the Sustainable Development Goals, to create a holistic view of the true impact of the pandemic. The focus on international and regional cooperation provides further insights on how management of the COVID-19-induced crisis can be altered and improved. Immediate effects of the pandemic were focused on healthcare, but long-term and knock-on effects spread to different societal sectors and must be analyzed to ensure they will be addressed and, ultimately, resolved. Abstract

This book explores post-Soviet Eurasian regional security governance, as embedded in the military alliance of Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). CSTO was established in 2002 and consists of six post-Soviet countries: Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Moving studies of regional security governance beyond the so-called Eurocentrism trend expressed, inter alia, via the focus on Western military alliance, such as NATO, this book examines CSTO as a new, post-Soviet form of regional security cooperation by looking at the reasons and drivers behind the establishment of the post-Soviet Eurasian security governance; the organization's institutional design; the military capabilities of its member states; the degree of the members' integration within the alliance; the cooperation pattern adopted by CSTO members; as well as the effect and effectiveness of this military alliance. Igor Davidzon is an independent researcher in international relations. He previously completed post-doctoral research in the Center for Transnational Relations, Foreign and Security Policy at Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. He is the author of Patterns of Conventional War fighting under the Nuclear Umbrella (2020).

Abstract

"This book fills an important intellectual gap as most non-Asian researchers know very little about East Asia's OECD/DAC members. This thought-provoking book is essential reading for all who are examining the future of international cooperation in an increasingly uncertain world." - David Hulme, Professor of Development Studies, University of Manchester "This is a welcome and timely contribution to the scholarship on the history, politics and outcomes of development co-operation in East Asia. Its substantive content and analytic frameworks will be of interest and value not only for Development Studies but also for Comparative Social Policy studies more generally." - Rebecca Surender, Pro Vice-Chancellor, University of Oxford "Japan-Korea combined efforts would be a far reaching statement economically, intellectually and ethically. It can be a formidable force in support of this region's core aspirations for development and long term stability. Such a role is much awaited." - Binayak Sen, Director General of the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies "Japan and South Korea have both become increasingly noteworthy players in the field of international development cooperation. Using a comparative perspective, this edited volume explores systematically this important yet under-studied topic." - Daniel Béland, James McGill Professor, McGill University This book examines the evolution of foreign aid policy in Japan and South Korea, analyzing policy rationales, institutional developments and policy choices. The book searches for new strategies of international development cooperation in an uncertain world. The book compares two countries' policies in a unique way: pairs of Japanese and Korean scholars examine same policy themes in separate chapters. This book will be of great value to scholars of international development cooperation, public policy and East Asian politics. Abstract

This is the first book to clarify the relationships between multi-functions of urban agriculture, creative classes, and social business in China and Japan. Specifically, it constructs a new framework showing how these factors contribute to the sustainability of cities by introducing the mixed methods research of structural equation modeling and the trajectory equifinality model. Policy implications drawn from the research suggests that governments should provide opportunities to create a virtuous cycle to improve the accumulation of social capital in order to attract those who think creatively. It is widely agreed that a sustainable city should meet the needs of the present generation without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. However, there has been no completely agreed-upon definition for what a sustainable city should be nor upon the paradigm for what components should be included. On the other hand, there is a possibility that the multi-functions of urban agriculture may attract especially those who are thinking creatively. These creative thinkers have a high level of social capital, pay attention to social issues, and are greatly motivated to find solutions through social enterprises such as agriculture-related business.

Abstract

This book states that burden-sharing is one of the most persisting sources for tension and disagreement within NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation). It also belongs to one of the most studied issues within NATO with distinguishable traditions and schools of thought. However, this pertinent question has been rarely discussed extensively by academics. The key idea of the book is to make burden-sharing more understandable as a historical, contemporary and future phenomenon. The authors take a comprehensive look at what is actually meant with burden-sharing and how it has evolved as a concept and a real-life phenomenon through the 70 years of NATO's existence. Tommi Koivula is professor of Strategy at the Department of Warfare, the Finnish National Defence University. Heljä Ossa is a researcher and a PhD student at the Department of Warfare at the Finnish National Defence University. .
