This myth's distinct forms in each historical era reflect and distill wider changes occurring in the spheres of politics, philosophy, aesthetics, and social values, and as a story that persists continually across three millennia it provides a unique lens for cross-historical comparison across western thought"--

Gegenstand dieser Untersuchung sind die mythischen Erzählungen, die sich zahlreich in den Epinikien Pindars finden. Ihre Funktion innerhalb der Oden stand bereits vielfach im Zentrum des Forschungsinteresses. Biographisch-historische Deutungen interpretierten Einzelheiten der mythischen Erzählungen häufig mit Blick auf die konkreten Rahmenbedingungen der jeweils aktuellen Festgegenwart. Im Unterschied dazu verwendet die vorliegende Untersuchung einen narratologischen Ansatz und zeigt: Die mythischen Erzählungen beziehen sich in einem grundlegenderen Sinne, d.h. unabhängig vom je spezifischen Anlass und seinen individuellen Rahmenbedingungen, auf die Festgegenwart in der Konstellation aus Wettkampfsieg und anschließender Epinikienaufführung.0Wie die Interpretation ausgewählter Oden zeigt, spiegelt sich die Konstellation der Festgegenwart in einem zweischrittigen Aufbau der mythischen Handlungen wider. Zunächst wird der Vollzug einer heroischen Leistung dargestellt, danach die daraus resultierenden Folgen. Wahl, Charakterisierung, Konstellation und Interaktion der im Mythos auftretenden Figuren lassen ebenso grundlegende Parallelen zur Festgegenwart erkennen. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf der erzähltechnischen Ausgestaltung zeitlicher Aspekte, die den genannten Handlungsschritten zugewiesen werden. 0Die Form der Abbildung der Festgegenwart in den mythischen Erzählungen, weiterhin ihre besondere erzähltechnische Gestaltung, zudem die Art der Ausgestaltung und Zuweisung der zeitlichen Aspekte können Aufschluss darüber geben, welche Bedeutung Pindar insbesondere der eigenen Dichtung im Kontext von Wettkampfsieg und anschließender Siegesfeier mit Aufführung seiner Epinikien beimisst. Dies betrifft vor allem die Frage, auf welchem Wege und in welcher Form anlässlich einer vollbrachten Leistung ein dauerhaftes Nachleben erlangt werden kann. 0.

Around the turn of the nineteenth century, no task seemed more urgent to German Romantics than the creation of a new mythology. It would unite modern poets and grant them common ground, and bring philosophers and the Volk closer together. But what would a new mythology look like? Only one model sufficed, according to Friedrich Schlegel: Dante's Divine Comedy. Through reading and juxtaposing canonical and obscure texts, Dante in Deutschland shows how Dante's work shaped the development of German Romanticism; it argues, all the while, that the weight of Dante's influence induced a Romantic preoccupation with authority: Who was authorized to create a mythology? This question-traced across texts by Schelling, Novalis, and Goethe-begets a Neo-Romantic fixation with Dantean authority in the mythic ventures of Gerhart Hauptmann, Rudolf Borchardt, and Stefan George. Only in Thomas Mann's novels, DiMassa asserts, is the Romantics' Dantean project ultimately demythologized.
