It is widely recognized that Latinos are a sizable and diverse population and that they are a young demographic. The median age of non-Hispanic white Americans is 58, whereas for Latinos it is 30. Perhaps this partially explains the dearth of attention afforded to the topic of aging Latinos by academic scholarship and the mainstream media. This book compellingly alerts us to the reality that there is a growing, aging Latino population about which we know very little and that deserves our attention. The book responds to this significant gap in our knowledge with an exciting set of academic articles and creative contributions that challenges not only our assumptions about Latinos and aging but also our thinking on the types of contributions in an academic context. The contributors make the case that the story of Latino elderhood is best conveyed through a truly multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach, bringing together public policy, humanistic social sciences, and artistic interventions. Previously published as a Special Issue in the journal: Latino Studies "Special Issue: The Art of Latina and Latino Elderhood".

This book examines the emergence of the black middle classes in urban Brazil, after 30 years of black mobilization and against the backdrop of deep economic, cultural, and political transformations taking place in recent decades within the country. One of the consequences of such transformations is said to be the restructuring of gender, race, and class relations. Utilizing qualitative research techniques such as ethnography, interviews, life histories, and focus groups among Afro-descendant families in the Northeast region of the country, the book explores contemporary race, class, and gender inequalities and their impact on daily lived experience. It reveals the dynamics underlying upward mobility, the diverse modes and experiences of social ascent into the middle classes, and the everyday negotiations involved in establishing one's status in the socio-racial hierarchy, which are not captured by other, more "macro" lenses. While some of these patterns are not peculiar to black people, this book argues that "race" shaped the contours and possibilities of social mobility in particular ways. This book is critical reading for specialists in the fields of inequality and race, class, and gender relations. Doreen Joy Gordon is a Lecturer in Anthropology in the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of the West Indies, Jamaica. Dr. Gordon's research interests focus on race and other social inequalities, postcolonialism, decolonization, family/kinship, religion and aesthetics, and social justice issues in Africa, Brazil, and the Caribbean.

This book offers a unique perspective on the Brazilian communication environment in the middle of its most serious political crisis after a military dictatorship. The 2013 protests were an important turning point in the political life of the country, and are often seen as the trigger of many communicational and political dynamics that have led to recent political events, such as the election of a far right wing president. Understanding the transformation of the communication environment at that moment, as well as its consequences, helps to explain what is happening in the country today. The book’s argument finds its foundations in the following: a systemic view of the communication environment, a conception of technology as structured and transformed by its use, and an understanding of communicational dynamics as an essential part of democratic systems. Drawing on both interviews with key actors in the protests and on analysis of a corpus of tweets, the book assesses the relationship between the use of social media and the formation of mainstream discourses surrounding the concept of mediactivism. It also investigates alternative paths of information made possible by the use of social media when new mediators emerge, going on to search for an understanding of the consequences of social media visibility dynamics on the construction of the common world. Nina Santos is a Post-doctoral fellow in Digital Democracy at the Brazilian National Institute of Science & Technology, Brazil. She is also an Associate Researcher at the Centre d'Analyse et de Recherche Interdisciplinaires sur les Médias (Université Paris II), France. .

The chapters in the Women’s Football in Latin America two volumes will look at the social and historical means of the embodied representation of gender differences that has been deeply embedded in the history of Latin American women and football. The authors identify and analyse how, in a range of ways, Latin American women have found in-between spaces, amid severe macho structures, to establish and play their football. As a result, the book will be of interest to researchers and students of sport sociology, football studies, gender studies, comparative sports studies, sports history, and Latin American sporting culture. The first volume of this edited collection brings together a variety of high-quality research investigating women’s football in Brazil to an international, English readership. The complex issues surrounding women and sport have attracted the attention of Brazilian academics since the early 1980s, and this book seeks to update that scholarship to the modern day, with chapters on sports media, 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, grassroots women’s football, women’s football fans. The book also indicates the forthcoming research and political challenges for gender equity in Brazilian football. Jorge Knijnik is an Associate Professor at Western Sydney University, Australia, where he is a lecturer in the School of Education and a researcher in the Institute for Culture & Society. Ana Costa is a journalist and researcher with a Master of Marts in Sports for Development (German Sport University), Germany. In addition, she is active in the digital media market as a content producer and strategist since 2001 having been part of the Brazilian Olympic Committee social media team.

This book examines subjectivity and neoliberalism in Latin America. The chapters, first published in the journal Subjectivity, cover a range of topics, from work to childcare to violence to university education. In the Introduction, Julian Medina Zarate and Flavia Uchoa point out the complex history of the arrival and take-up of neoliberalism across the continent, the deep-seated role of colonial and post-colonial violence, thus the specificity of modes of governance in the complex relationship between the North and the South. The chapter by Antar Martinez Guzman considers the role of neoliberalism in the huge rise in male violence across the country, exploring hyper-violent masculinities in the context of social precarity. Antonio Stecher and Alvaro Soto Roy discuss the transformations in work identities and thus the consequences for subjectivity for workers in three kinds of employment in neoliberal Chile. Fabio d’Oliviera studies phsychologists operating in an increasingly precarised service sector in public assistance programmes in Brazil. Hernan Pulido Martinez explores the role of artefacts in the introduction of discourses and practices related to quality within a university in Colombia. Ana Vergara discusses parent-child relations in the context of neoliberal Chile. Valerie Walkerdine is Professor in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University, Wales.
