Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This book stems primarily from the intention to make public the seminar entitled "Narratives and Cultural Psychology" held by J. Bruner and C. Feldman in May 2000 in Florence. This seminar represents the point of view of these two authors, at an important moment in their scientific and human careers, on two themes: narratives and interpretative communities. The central concept on which this book works is the Aristotelian concept of peripeteia which, born in the world of art, is developed by Bruner in the field of cognitive and cultural psychology and by Feldman in the concept of interpretative community. Thus the first purpose of this book is to analyze the role and usefulness of this concept in the study of the world of stories and culture The second aim of this book is to explain, clarify and comment on the concept, the theoretical assumptions and the key words used by the two authors, while also exploring the issues addressed. In this way, the author wanted to reflect on what contribution this seminar offers today to the theme of narratives and cultural psychology and what the future prospects might be. This book is aimed at students and scholars interested in exploring the role that stories play in human culture.

Abstract

"Citizenship on Catfish Row focuses on three seminal works in the history of American culture: the first full-length narrative film, D. W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation; the first integrated musical, Oscar Hammerstein and Jerome Kern's Showboat; and the first great American opera, George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. Each of these works sought to make a statement about American identity in the form of a narrative, and each included in that narrative a prominent role for Black people. Each work included jarring or discordant elements that pointed to a deeper tension between the kind of stories Americans wish to tell about themselves and the historical and social reality of race. Although all three have been widely criticized, their efforts to connect the concepts of nation and race are not only instructive about the history of the American imagination but also provide unexpected resources for contemporary reflection"-- "Citizenship on Catfish Row: Race and Nation in American Popular Culture retrieves three "iconic" works, each of which launched an entire genre-the serious narrative film (The Birth of a Nation), the "integrated musical" (Show Boat), and American opera (Porgy and Bess), to interpret popular entertainment in the Jim Crow era. Despite their manifold differences, these radically innovative works shared two striking features: each attempted to represent the character or spirit of America in narrative form, and each included in that story a central role for the issue of race. As popular entertainment designed to appeal to audiences, these works both endorsed and helped to shape a contemporary social consensus on race that we now find grievously flawed, and each has been sharply and appropriately criticized on that account. But when read with attention to the many ways in which they seem to question, and even contradict themselves, these works appear in a very different light, not as monuments to a dishonorable past but as expressions of a conflicted and uncertain culture burdened by history but groping its way-not always with a purposeful stride, not always with clear sight, and not always in good faith-toward a present moment confident enough of its position to criticize them. By identifying the common ambition in these foundational works, Citizenship on Catfish Row enables us to see them as moments in an evolving popular understanding of American national identity. And by focusing on points of incoherence or dissonance in their telling of the national story, it suggests the impediment to national unity represented by race. Drawing attention to the ways in which popular entertainment confronted, sometimes through evasion and sometimes with a brutal honesty, the issue of race, Harpham proposes that analysis of these works can benefit our polarized and vitriolic conversation about our nation's most important problem"--

Abstract

An illuminating history of the Fed from its founding through the tumult of 2020. In The Federal Reserve: A New History, Robert L. Hetzel draws on more than forty years of experience as an economist in the central bank to trace the influences of the Fed on the American economy. Comparing periods in which the Fed stabilized the economy to those when it did the opposite, Hetzel tells the story of a century-long pursuit of monetary rules capable of providing for economic stability. Recast through this lens and enriched with archival materials, Hetzel's sweeping history offers a new understanding of the bank's watershed moments since 1913. This includes critical accounts of the Great Depression, the Great Inflation, and the Great Recession-including how these disastrous events could have been avoided. A critical volume for a critical moment in financial history, The Federal Reserve it is an expert, sweeping account that promises to recast our understanding of the central bank in its second century.

Abstract

The fur trade was the heart of the French empire in early North America. The French-Canadian (Canadien) men who traversed the vast hinterlands of the Hudson Bay watershed, trading for furs from Indigenous trappers and hunters, were its cornerstone.Though the Canadiens worked for French colonial authorities, they were not unwavering agents of imperial power. Increasingly they found themselves between two worlds as they built relationships with Indigenous communities, sometimes joining them through adoption or marriage, raising families of their own. The result was an ambivalent empire that grew in fits and starts. It was guided by imperfect information, built upon a contested Indigenous borderland, fragmented by local interests, and periodically neglected by government administrators. Heirs of an Ambivalent Empire explores the lives of the Canadiens who used family and kinship ties to navigate between sovereign Indigenous nations and the French colonial government from the early 1660s to the 1780s.Acting as cultural intermediaries, the Canadiens made it possible for France to extend its presence into northwest North America. Over time, however, their uncertain relationships with the French colonial state splintered imperial authority, leading to an outcome that few could have foreseen – the emergence of a new Indigenous culture, language, people, and nation: the Métis.

Abstract

"Hieronymus Bosch's (c. 1450-1516) 'Garden of Earthly Delights' has elicited a sense of wonder for centuries. Over ten feet long and seven feet tall, it demands that we step back to take it in, while its surface, intricately covered with fantastical creatures in dazzling detail, draws us closer. In this highly original reassessment, Margaret D. Carroll reads the Garden as a speculation about the origin of the cosmos, the life-history of earth, and the transformation of humankind from the first age of world history to the last. Upending traditional interpretations of the painting as a moralizing depiction of God's wrath, human sinfulness, and demonic agency, Carroll argues that it represents Bosch's exploration of progressive changes in the human condition and the natural world. Extensively researched and beautifully illustrated, this groundbreaking secular analysis draws on new findings about Bosch's idiosyncratic painting technique, his curiosity about natural history, his connections to the Burgundian court, and his experience of contemporary politics. The book offers fresh insights into the artist and his most beloved and elusive painting."--
