Abstract

This edited book serves as the first instalment of a two-part title that aims to provide an academic exploration of the contemporary issues and perspectives on tourism in the Philippines. With a strong geographical focus, this book is the first country-focused volume under the series, Perspectives on Asian Tourism. Comprised of chapters based on conceptual and empirical research, this book aims to develop a foundational and practical knowledge base on Philippine tourism management. The chapters cover a range of national, regional, and local tourism management issues that cut across the following themes: • Governance issues in Philippine tourism destinations • The Tourism Act of 2009 • Tourism impacts and sustainability • Innovative tourism development strategies • Tourism marketing campaigns (i.e., It's More Fun in the Philippines!) • Philippine tourism and the ASEAN integration • Tourism and hospitality education in the Philippines The contributions are drawn from the works of Filipino academics based in the Philippines and overseas institutions, and international academics researching tourism issues in the Philippines. The chapters are informed by a diverse set of disciplines including, but not limited to tourism studies, hospitality management, marketing, human resources management, public policy, environmental management, community development, and education. This edited book is divided into four parts: first, an introduction to the development of policy and contemporary management issues in Philippine tourism; second, nature-based tourism and the natural environment; third, product development and branding; and fourth, accreditation and industry standards. The volume culminates with a synthesis of the progress of Philippine tourism development and management implications using the cases and experiences outlined in the chapters. This book serves as a systematic guide to the current state of tourism development and management in the Philippines, and as essential reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers, educators, and, more importantly, tourism policy-makers. .

Abstract

This book examines the economic circumstances in which films were produced, distributed, exhibited, and consumed during the spoken era of film production until 1970. The periodisation covers the years between the onset of sound and the demise of the phased distribution of films. Films are generally appreciated for their aesthetic qualities. But they are also commodities. This work of economic history presents a new approach, considering consumption behaviour as significant as supply-side decision-making. Audiences’ tastes are considered central, with box-office an indicator of what they liked. The POPSTAT Index of Film Popularity is used as a proxy where box office knowledge is missing. Comparative analysis is conducted through the tool RelPOP. The book comprises original case studies covering film consumption in Great Britain, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United States during the 1930s; Australia and occupied Belgium during the Second World War; and Italy, the United States, Poland and Czechoslovakia during the Post-war. An overriding theme is how the classical American business model, which emerged during the 1910s linking production to distribution and exhibition, adapted to local circumstances, including the two countries behind the Iron Curtain during the years of ‘High Stalinism’. .

Abstract

This book explores the application of service design to urban commons. It originates from a project developed by the research group of POLIMI DESIS Lab of Politecnico di Milano, aimed at imagining the future of the Reggio Emilia Ducal Palace and its park - the Reggia di Rivalta. The peculiarity of the project lays in the idea that the design of a (public) space should be informed by the design of its services, because the development of specific activities actually builds a fundamental part of the identity of a place, conceiving both the tangible and intangible dimensions as part of a single creative process. The combination of a participatory process and the integration of spatial and service design led to infrastructuring a multi-stakeholder participatory action research of envisioning the future of a public good. This effort has been thus framed into a working methodology, specific tools and progressive outputs, which are defined as Service Master Planning (the process), and Service Master Plan (the product), allowing service design professionals to expand their knowledge and develop skills for a new field of application connected to urban planning.
