Abstract

With his innovative research on Kant and German Idealism, Eckart Förster has been a major driving force in research on idealism for many years. In particular, his works on Kant's 'Opus postumum' and spatial schematism, on intellectual intuition and intuitive understanding, on Fichte, Hölderlin, and Goethe, on the genesis of Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit as well as on the importance of Goethe for post-Kantian philosophy have received widespread attention. This volume contains many of his most important essays from the last three decades.

Abstract

How is it possible to arrive at valid conclusions about a mind-independent world through reflection on the necessary conditions of experience and intentionality? The present study develops this problem of objective validity with recourse to the contemporary debate on transcendental arguments. It thereby develops an argument-based approach to two paradigmatic texts of post-Kantian idealism: Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit and Fichte’s Science of Knowledge 1804-II. It is shown that Hegel and Fichte try to dissolve the problem of objective validity by using a method of philosophical therapy which takes on the form of an ascent to absolute knowing. The study presents a novel interpretation of Hegel’s Phenomenology, which shows it to have methodological affinities with the paradigm of geometrical construction, and of Fichte’s late Science of Knowledge, which reappraises the role of the conceptual for Fichte. Systematically, a skeptical revenge problem is developed: idealism as such is shown to be fraught with an internal tension between claims to objectivity and skepticism. It is this inner tension that motivates the reflective ascent of the transcendental approach.

Abstract

This volume contains texts by Schelling from the period of 1806–1808. Polemical writings, in particular the ›Darlegung des wahren Verhältnisses der Naturphilosophie zu der verbesserten Fichte’schen Lehre‹ (Exposition of the True Relation of the Philosophy of Nature to the Improved Fichtean Theory) document Schellings’ public response to Fichte’s repeated attacks against the Philosophy of Nature (Naturphilosophie). The paper ›Über das Verhältniß des Realen und Idealen in der Natur‹ (On the Relation of the Real and the Ideal in Nature) was published in 1806 as the introduction to the second edition of the ›Weltseele‹. Schelling himself considered it »the best« that he had delivered in a long time in the matter of Philosophy of Nature. It offers – in a summarised form – an impressive insight into the foundational part of his Philosophy of Identity. Smaller texts on rhabdomancy and skull theory complete the volume.

Abstract

Freedom is one of the main issues of modern philosophy and Kant's and Hegel's conceptions of freedom form a major source for comprehending it. However, not only are both Kant's and Hegel' conceptions discussed controversially, in the philosophical debate it also remains highly contested which of them offers a more thorough account of freedom. In this volume, Werner Flach presents Kant's conception of freedom as well as its potential for understanding basic features of humanity. Christian Krijnen presents Hegel's conception of freedom and shows that Kant's conception neglects an essential feature that concerns the actualization of freedom. In their contributions to the discussion, Martin Bunte, Jakub Kloc-Konkołowicz, Hernán Pringe, Jacco Verburgt, Kenneth R. Westphal, and Manfred Wetzel assess the results.

Abstract

Many philosophical accounts of reason are geared toward providing rational justifications ex post facto rather than accounting for the role reason plays in actu in the process of creative work. Moreover, when in actu accounts of reason are given, they are usually too narrow to describe the sort of high-level creative work that is involved in the composition of poetry or the creation of a scientific theory. This book suggests that the rudiments of a broader account are found in various German Idealist figures, most notably the philosopher-novelist-critic Friedrich Schlegel and the philosophical poet and novelist Friedrich Hölderlin. However, German Idealism generally is subject to Hans Blumenberg‘s secularization critique which provides a strong prima facie argument that the accounts of poetic reason suggested by Schlegel and Hölderlin are indefensible. This book argues that confronting Blumenberg’s secularization critique and his associated legitimation of modernity with a romantic conception of poetic reason requires revisions on both sides, and that the work of Lacan is especially well-suited to provide the conditions upon which a legitimation of poetic reason can be provided. O. Bradley Bassler is Associate Professor, Emeritus at the University of Georgia, Athens, USA. He has published five previous books, including two with Palgrave Macmillan: Diagnosing Contemporary Philosophy with the Matrix Movies (2017) and Kant, Shelley and the Visionary Critique of Metaphysics (2018). .
