Abstract

"Plant Receptor-like Kinases: Role in Development and Stress presents the latest research in receptor-like kinases (RLKs), a class of development and defense-response proteins in plants. As one of the largest protein families, with roles ranging from growth and development to stress response, RLKs are involved in every aspect of the plant life cycle, including growth and development, reproduction, and immunity. Development of high throughput sequencing technology has improved the identification and characterization of numerous gene families in plants in the recent years, allowing researchers to identify and characterize numerous RLK sub-families in model plant species and agro-economically important crop plants like rice, wheat, sorghum, tomatoes, and more. This book provides foundational knowledge on the classification of RLKs, their mechanism of action and their roles in the plant life cycle, as well as the most up-to-date advances in the applications of RLKs. It is an essential read for researchers interested in plant signaling and plant genomics. Key Features: Presents detailed information on receptor like kinases (RLKs), including their mechanism of action and classification. Analyzes numerous sub-families of RLKs and their roles in plant development and stress management. Highlights the function of RLKs in plant innate immunity."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

This book provides an essential overview of the role of phosphoinositide-3-phosphate kinase (PI3K) isoforms in modulating the function of immune system cells and their involvement in disease. PI3K is a family of kinases involved in basic cellular processes such as proliferation, migration and cell death. Recent work has highlighted the multiple roles of PI3K classes and subunits and their involvement in the immune response to the body’s own and foreign antigens and diseases such as cancer and autoimmunity. This book offers a detailed introduction to the biology of the three PI3K classes, followed by an extensive discussion of the diverse roles of AKT and PI3K isoforms in immune cells. Based on this knowledge, it subsequently explains in more detail how specific isoforms are connected to immune-mediated diseases. The book concludes by highlighting the latest advances in the production of isoform-specific inhibitors and their use in various human diseases. This book is intended as a reference guide for students and researchers interested in the multifaceted aspects of PI3K biology.

Abstract

The content is presented in four main section. The first explores the foundations of Cell Movement, including overviews of cellular structure, signaling, physiology, motion-related proteins, and the interface with the cellular membrane. The second part covers the biological aspects of cellular movement, starting with chemical and mechanical sensing, describing the types of cell movement, mechanics at cell level, cell physiology, collective behavior, and the connections with the extracellular matrix. The following chapters provide an overview of the molecular machinery involved and cell-type specific movement. The third part of the book is dedicated to the translational aspects of cell movement, highlighting the key conditions associated with cell movement dysfunction, like cell invasion in cancer, wound healing, developmental issues, neurological dysfunctions, and immune response. The final part of the book covers key methods and modeling tools for cell movement research, including predictive mathematical models, in vitro and in vivo methods, biophysical and bioinformatics tools.

Abstract

This detailed volume covers diverse aspects of P2X7 receptor analysis, ranging from its molecular structure to related pharmacological and immunological tools, via its analysis in heterologous expression systems as well as assays using primary cells and whole animal models. After three introductory chapters that focus on its structure, ligands, and physiological functions, the book details the generation of antibody and nanobody tools for P2X7 receptors, provides protocols for the analysis of expressed P2X7 receptors with a focus on their electrophysiological analysis, as well as protocols for the investigation of P2X7 down-stream signaling in immune cells by flow cytometry. Mouse models and procedures suited to investigate P2X7-mediated effects in other primary cells and in vivo are also explained. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, The P2X7 Receptor: Methods and Protocols is a valuable reference not only for the growing community fascinated by this unusual ion channel but also for a broad readership interested in ion channels or purinergic receptors.

Abstract

After the long history of screening, it is becoming difficult to find novel compounds from microorganisms and plants anywhere in the world. Until now, more than about 30,000 marine natural products have been reported. However, with the development of marine natural products research, the hit rate of new compounds is also decreasing. Scientists are now turning their attention to the deep sea, where a high hit rate of novel compounds is expected. Many small compounds and peptides from microorganisms and sponges are with therapeutic activity are shown in this book. This Special Issue Book, “Natural Products from the Deep Sea”, should be useful for the screening of novel and useful compounds from nature.
