Order Overload: Cafe - Vergeten... is leuk!?OH OH!

"This book argues that coffeehouses and the coffee trade were central to the making of the Atlantic world in the century leading up to the American Revolution. Fostering international finance and commerce, spreading transatlantic news, building military might, determining political fortunes and promoting status and consumption, coffeehouses created a web of social networks stretching from Britain to its colonies in North America. As polite alternatives to taverns, coffeehouses have been hailed as 'penny universities'; a place for political discussion by the educated and elite. Reynolds shows that they were much more than this. Coffeehouse Culture in the Atlantic World 1650-1789, reveals that they simultaneously created a network for marine insurance and naval protection, led to calls for a free press, built tension between trade lobbyists and the East India Company, and raised questions about gender, respectability and the polite middling class. It reveals how coffeehouses served to create transatlantic connections between metropole Britain and her North American colonies and played an important role in the revolution and protest movements that followed"--

A social history of Scottish drinking and drinking establishmentsPoets and writers from Robert Burns and Walter Scott to Ian Rankin and Irvine Welsh have left vivid descriptions of the pleasures and pains of Scottish drinking places. Pubs also provided public spaces for occupational groups to meet, for commercial transactions, for literary and cultural activities and for everyday life and work rituals such as births, marriages and deaths and events linked with the agricultural year. Considering Scottish drinking places in an anthropological context, this bookexamines their role in everyday life, community and work rituals.

The late architect Kerry Hill designed buildings that whisper rather than scream. This beautifully illustrated book brings together a corpus of works from 1992 to the present, with an emphasis on the actively ongoing practice's recently completed works, including the celebrated Aman hotels and resorts in Tokyo, Kyoto and outside Shanghai, as well as important large-scale buildings in his home town, Perth. Kerry Hill was one of the masters of 20th-century architecture, consistently designing restrained, cleverly conceived buildings that often blurred the boundaries of defined space with permeable screened walls and lush landscapes beyond. His practice's sensitivity to local materials and construction is renowned, resulting in architecture with a lightness of touch that sits perfectly in its environment. With recent projects such as the Amanyangyun hotel in China, the practice has explored restoration, moving ancient trees and houses 700 km (435 miles) to be meticulously reassembled and updated with modern-day touches to create a series of historic villas set in bamboo groves. The Aman Kyoto resort, meanwhile, reimagined a forest landscape initially slated as the garden for a textile museum as the setting for a 26-suite contemporary ryokan. Documenting in detail more than fifty projects across Australasia, this is the only comprehensive monograph of perhaps the most refined and respected architect of his generation.

Sustainability comes in many forms and is increasingly linked to strategy and to marketing. Organizations have long since recognized the importance of corporate social responsibility and, hence, it is the upper echelon of the enterprise that is involved in the major decisions in this area. Dedicated and specialized teams are the future of organizational sustainability, and we predict that the next decade will see an exponential increase in sustainable activity and investment. Firms cannot afford to let certain opportunities pass without leaving their mark—a mark which will affect the brand and, more importantly, consumers’ minds and their attitudes towards the market of products and services. The market in general will have to adapt to the circular economy and to the well-being of employees and, indeed, of society and its stakeholders, in order to prosper. We are glad to have made even a small contribution to the growing debate on green and soft issues, such as those contained in this book.
