Abstract

Since its publication in 2006, The Gospel of Judas has generated remarkable interest and debate among scholars and general readers alike. In this noncanonical Coptic text from the second century CE, Jesus engages in a series of conversations with his disciples and with Judas, explaining the origin of the cosmos and its rulers, the existence of another holy race, and the coming end of the current world order. In this new translation and commentary, David Brakke addresses the major interpretive questions that have emerged since the text's discovery, exploring the ways that The Gospel of Judas sheds light on the origins and development of gnostic mythology, debates over the Eucharist and communal authority, and Christian appropriation of Jewish apocalyptic eschatology. The translation reflects new analyses of the work's genre and structure, and the commentary and notes provide thorough discussions of the text's grammar and numerous lacunae and ambiguities.

Abstract

Abstract

This work, edited by Henryk Drawnel, contains the posthumous edition and commentary of the Aramaic Testament of Levi by Józef Tadeusz Milik. The composition of Levi presents the reader with the autobiographical account of the life of Levi, the patriarch of the eponymous priestly tribe in ancient Israel. Based on the available manuscripts from Qumran (4Q21; 4Q213; 4Q214; 4Q540; 4Q548), Mount Athos and the Cairo Genizah, the author of the monograph reconstructs the Aramaic form of the text, including some parts of the Testament Greek of Levi (Test. 12 Patr.), Jubilees and excerpts from patristic literature. The first chapter, written by Henryk Drawnel, introduces the reader to the monograph and presents an overview of Milik's use of the manuscripts in the reconstructed text as well as the general plan for a larger undertaking: publishing. Books of the Patriarchs of Qumran.

Abstract

The series Commentaries on Early Jewish Literature (CEJL) is devoted to the study of Jewish documents and traditions that can be dated or traced back to the Hellenistic and Roman periods (ca. 300 BCE-150 CE). The literature covered by the series represents a rich diversity of literary forms and religious perspectives. Formally, these writings include testaments, apocalypses, legends, expansions and interpretations of biblical writings, psalms and prayers, poetry, historiography, and wisdom literature. They witness to an immensely creative period during which many Jews were struggling to preserve a living faith in the wake of social, political, and religious upheavals in the Mediterranean world and the Near East.

Abstract

"After an overview of the Christian Apocrypha in Armenian, the volume starts with three essays dealing with the apostles of Armenia, Thaddaeus and Bartholomew. The cycle of Thaddaeus merges with the traditions related to Addai, King Abgar, and the old Christianity of Edessa, while the account of the discovery of the relics of Bartholomew in Armenia is connected with the bishop Marūtha of Maypherkat. The second part of the volume includes four essays on Thecla and on the different paradigms of holiness (virgin, martyr, preacher, and patroness of Nicaean orthodoxy) that she embodies in the ancient Armenian historiographical literature. The last two chapters are devoted to the Armenian translations of the Martyrdom of Andrew and the Martyrdom of Philip, which contain some Encratite passages absent from the Greek. All these essays stress the importance of the apocryphal writings as evidence for a better understanding of ancient Christianity in Armenia in its different facets and in its relations with the neighbouring Christian communities."

Abstract

"In contrast to scholarly belief that the author of the Epistle to the Hebrews envisions the transcendent, heavenly world as the eschatological inheritance of God's people, Jihye Lee argues that a version of an Urzeit-Endzeit eschatological framework - as observed in some Jewish apocalyptic texts - provides a plausible background against which the arguments of Hebrews are most comprehensively explained. Instead of transcendence to the heavenly world that will come after the destruction of the shakable creation, Lee suggests the possibility of a more dualistic new world. By first defining Urzeit-Endzeit eschatology, Lee is then able to explore its place in both pre and post 70 CE Second Temple Judaism. In examining Enoch, the Qumran Texts, Jubilees, the Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum, 4 Ezra and 2 Baruch and finally the Book of Revelation, Lee compares a multitude of eschatological visions and the different depictions of the transformation of the world, judgement and the new world to come. Bringing these texts together to analyse the issue of God's Rest in Hebrews, and the nature of the Unshakable Kingdom, Lee concludes that Hebrews envisions the kingdom as consisting of both the revealed heavenly world and the renewed creation as the eschatological venue of God's dwelling place with his people."--
