This collection of essays is the result of the joint efforts of colleagues and students of the leading social anthropology and post-socialism theorist, Professor Chris Hann. With the thirtieth anniversary of the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 2019 as their catalyst, the authors reflect upon Chris Hann's lifelong fieldwork in the discipline, spanning regions as diverse as East Central Europe, Turkey, and the Chinese north-west. The collapse of the Berlin Wall naturally triggered a plethora of analysis and scholarly research. Sociocultural anthropology, with its focus on ethnographic study and on the gradual evolution of social relations, sharply contrasted with the emphasis on dramatic rupture brought about by the 1989 transition. Continuing in this tradition, this volume, through micro-level analysis of societal transformation from the post-war years to the present day, provides an alternative perspective to the neoliberalist views often encountered in the scholarship on political and economic modernisation. The more nuanced analysis of social transformations proposed here is a particularly useful tool in the investigation of contemporary issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the refugee 'crisis', and the rise of right-wing populism in Eastern Europe and elsewhere. Anthropology of Transformation will be of interest to researchers in the fields of socio-cultural anthropology, religion and economics. Moreover, the book's discussion of issues widely discussed beyond the field of academia such as neoliberalism and the welfare state, and populist and exclusionary politics, will appeal to non-specialist readers.

Institutional ethnography (IE) originated as a feminist alternative to sociologies defining people as the objects of study. Instead, IE explores the social relations that dominate the life of the particular subject in focus. Simply Institutional Ethnography is written by two pioneers in the field and is grounded in decades of groundbreaking work. Dorothy E. Smith and Alison I. Griffith lay out the basics of how institutional ethnography proceeds as a sociology. The book introduces the concepts--Discourse, Work, Text--that institutional ethnographers have found to be key concepts used to organize what they learn from the study of people's experience. Simply Institutional Ethnography builds an ethnography that makes this material visible as coordinated sequences of social relations that reach beyond the particularities of local experience. In explicating the foundations of IE and its principal concepts, Simply Institutional Ethnography reflects on the ways in which the field may move forward.

"The book is an outcome of the cultural anthropologists' research team at the Faculty of Arts, Palacky University Olomouc. The aim is to contribute to the contemporary debate on cultural anthropology and deepen an understanding for the key anthropological concepts in today's world - culture within the so-called post-turn anthropology, transnational cultural identities and migration, faith and religions, commodification of culture in cultural tourism, migration and home, collaborative and multi-sited ethnography. The book points out some of the current approaches, trends and challenges without giving up the need to incorporate them in the rich intellectual leaven of contemporary social sciences, especially socio-cultural anthropology which is perceived as an open, interdisciplinary, comparative and truly global science. The book consists of six chapters dealing with diverse topics, from reflexivity and polovocality, through the anthropology of home and the anthropology or religion, to the anthropology of tourism. It points to considerable challenges facing contemporary anthropologists. However, it argues that the theoretical-methodological tools which anthropologists have at their disposal thanks to more than a century of development of the discipline - long-term fieldwork, historical depth and extensive analysis of the studied phenomena, emic and etic perspectives, cultural relativism, epistemological reflexivity and the necessary knowledge of the wider context - are the promise of a successful continuation of this discipline in the 21st century."-- Provided by publisher.

"Commissioned by the Qianlong emperor in 1751, the Qing Imperial Illustrations of Tributary Peoples (Huang Qing zhigong tu), is a captivating work of art and ideological statement of universal rule. Best understood as a cultural cartography of empire, the captivating artwork paired with ethnographic texts helps us to understand the complexity of Chinese diplomatic relations as well the ideological force behind them which was rooted in both dynastic history and the specifics of Qing rule"--
