Ephemeral phenomena like fire, precipitation, shade, and wind have emerged as important contemporary protagonists for environmental design due to their dynamic impact on buildings and cities. The importance of including these forces in architecture has gained rapid momentum in the global quest for sustainability. This book investigates the history, theory and applications of climatic design in the built environment examining architecture and landscapes from various time periods. Based on a collaboration between the University of Sydney and the National University of Singapore, the book brings together contributing authors from Australia, Singapore, and the United States.“Dry”, “Wet”, “Cool” and “Hot” divide the book into categories through which a wide array of representational topics are covered —from dust storms and clouds, to ice and bushfires. A concluding section presents project examples for exploratory application in the design of architecture.

Newer buildings often have complex geometries. They require ample structural implementation of the architectural design, which is often costlier than it should be. The right expertise is needed in order to choose a construction approach that is safe yet economical and fully adequate to the design demands. In a continuation of Modern Construction Case Studies, which focused on complex, preliminary design, Modern Structural Design presents illustrative case studies of how complex, innovative construction systems have been successfully implemented. They are presented with the aid of texts, drawings, and 3D renderings.

After its golden age in the last decades of the 20th century, diagramming is still an experimental practice today, but it focuses on the synthesis of complexity and on new disciplinary territories on the edge between humanities, art, architecture, urban planning and landscape. This manual presents experimental diagrams through sensing, analysing and transforming space. The contributions critically delineate diagrammatic behaviours in architectural history, present the design practices of offices such as AZPML and MVRDV, take the medium to its extreme consequences, and outline future trajectories.

How can architecture create a pleasant indoor climate using construction techniques and as little technology as possible? Researchers from four different departments at the Technical University of Munich joined forces with the engineering firm Transsolar Energietechnik to explore integral strategies for simple, energy-efficient construction. The architecture firm Florian Nagler Architekten implemented the plans developed by the TUM project for three prototype buildings made of solid wood, masonry and lightweight concrete in monolithic construction. Using these apartment buildings as examples, the guide vividly elucidates the six core principles of simple construction

Decisions regarding the supporting structure have an influence on the design of a building as well as an economic and ecological impact. The creation of great and innovative buildings requires close collaboration of architects, clients and structural engineers. Modern structural systems can benefit from an appropriate combination of various building materials. The Atlas Tragwerke (Support Structure Atlas) goes beyond material confines and showcases suitable construction principles for different building tasks. Classical masterpieces and outstanding current projects are used to demonstrate the potentials of structural systems for various building tasks and consider alternatives. Easy-to-compare structural principles offer a basis for a common level of communication in an interdisciplinary planning process.

In collaboration with IKEA, this inspirational study explores how to live more sustainably and well based on the experience of both ordinary and extraordinary lives, showing how small changes at home will work positively towards sustainability for our planetEver since the 1950s, IKEA retailers have visited homes all over the world to find out more about how we live. Inspired by this approach, Inter IKEA Systems and Phaidon have teamed up to explore the greatest challenge of our generation - living sustainably - through the lives of activists, artists, athletes, entrepreneurs and many more.Achieving a more sustainable life at home is one of the most pressing social and environmental challenges we face today as a society. Together with IKEA, we visit homes, workplaces and shared spaces from Mexico to Moscow, Bali to Beirut to find ways in which we can improve how we live. Our everyday actions might seem inconsequential, but the future of our planet starts with us.Bron : https://www.phaidon.com/store/design/us-and-our-planet-this-is-how-we-live-ikea-9781838664893/

The current epoch is one of accumulation: not only of capital but also of raw, often unruly material, from plastic in the ocean and carbon in the atmosphere to people, buildings, and cities. Alongside this material growth, image-making practices embedded within the fields of art and architecture have proven to be fertile, mobile, and capacious. Images of accumulation help open up the climate to cultural inquiry and political mobilization and have formed a cultural infrastructure focused on the relationships between humans, other species, and their environments. The essays in Accumulation address this cultural infrastructure and the methodological challenges of its analysis. They offer a response to the relative invisibility of the climate now seen as material manifestations of social behavior. Contributors outline opportunities and ambitions of visual scholarship as a means to encounter the challenges emergent in the current moment: how can climate become visible, culturally and politically? Knowledge of climatic instability can change collective behavior and offer other trajectories, counteraccumulations that draw the present into a different, more livable, future.Contributors: Emily Apter, New York U; Hans Baumann; Amanda Boeztkes, U of Guelph; Dominic Boyer, Rice U; Lindsay Bremner, U of Westminster; Nerea Calvillo, U of Warwick; Beth Cullen, U of Westminster; T.
