Schilder, etser en fotograaf Jozef Van Ruyssevelt (1941–1985) heeft in een korte tijdspanne een rijk, intens oeuvre tot stand gebracht, dat nog veel te weinig bekend is. Hij was een meester in het gebruik van kleur en clair-obscur, en zijn alledaagse omgeving vormde voor hem een niet-aflatende bron van inspiratie – meubels, gebruiksvoorwerpen, planten, muren, ramen, gebladerte, graspartijen, het omliggende platteland. In zijn stijl vallen de abrupte overgangen op die ook karakteristiek waren voor zijn nu eens geëxalteerde, dan weer neerslachtige persoonlijkheid. Dit boek presenteert een groot aantal essentiële werken, waarvan er vele nooit eerder zijn gereproduceerd, aangevuld met nog ongepubliceerde foto’s uit het archief van de kunstenaar. Bij het beeldende werk bevinden zich verschillende gouaches die worden bezocht door de geesten van William Turner, John Constable, Vincent van Gogh, Edward Hopper, Cy Twombly of Mark Rothko. Maar een geest is geen invloed. Van Ruyssevelt putte niet rechtstreeks uit hun schilderijen en zou dat ook niet hebben willen doen. De werken in kwestie duiden op een mysterieus, geheim pact tussen schilders, met de Schilderkunst – ‘bezocht worden’, dat is in dit boek de andere betekenis van ‘bezoek’.

In Beyond Borders, the artist Isabel Miquel Arqués enters a dialogue with Karen Blixen (1885?1962), the Danish author who wrote under the pseudonym Isak Dinesen and whose best-known books, Out of Africa and Babette?s Feast, were turned into successful movies. Arqués uses stunning photographs, screen prints and striking fragments of prose and poetry to link her own life with Blixen?s.She paid several visits to Rungstedlund, the author?s former home and now a museum, where she photographed objects that Blixen used every day. These triggered a parallel and highly personal story in Arqués? own imagination, which gradually intertwined with that of Karen Blixen herself. "The 20th century is a relatively overlooked period in Japanese printmaking. Since the 1990s, however, museums and private collectors have shown a growing interest in shin hanga ('new prints'). These beautiful designs are the fruit of the traditional yet highly successful collaboration between artist, publisher, block-cutter and printer. The prints are dominated by two genres: beautiful women by artists such as Goyō, Kotondo and Shinsui and imposing landscapes by artists such as Hasui and Shinsui. However, it is not so much in their subject matter as through their visual language that shin hanga prints set themselves apart from their traditional precursors. Where the classically depicted women were stylized and idealized, their more recent counterparts were based on real models and are charged with emotion. The shin hanga landscapes, meanwhile, are more impressionistic than figurative, using a range of colour nuances to achieve exceptionally atmospheric results. An astonishing degree of technical perfection is another feature of these prints. The dynamic publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō (1885-1962) was the driving force behind the shin hanga movement. Under his influence, the emphasis shifted from mass production to a more exclusive form of expression. The fine selection reproduced here is mostly drawn from two large private collections, supplemented by works from the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels and, by way of great exception, items from the family collection of the publisher Watanabe, the man who started it all." -- Back cover

The artist José Vermeersch (1922–1997) is known for his ceramic sculptures of heterogeneous figures. Yet he was a painter, weaver and designer too, who created a rich oeuvre imbued with his passion for people, animals and life. This book pays tribute to the genesis of Vermeersch’ figurative work and uses around a hundred sculptures and paintings to show the exceptional way in which his pictorial and his ceramic work are interwoven. The indeterminate and non-binary character of Vermeersch’ oeuvre – from gender to species (human/animal) – is explored in depth along with ideas such as sustainability and fragility.
