Squaring the Circle is a musi­cal answer on Pi, a key work by artist Johan de Wilde and part of the S.M.A.K. col­lec­tion. It is a piece for 4 per­cus­sion­ists and elec­tron­ics.H.V.H. manip­u­lat­ed Pi by using the sequence of num­bers main­ly to cre­ate chaos and unpre­dictabil­i­ty.Visually there is a link with the ver­ti­cal aspect of Johan De Wilde’s work through the choice of a set of tubu­lar bells per play­er and a ref­er­ence to the title through the large num­ber of round instru­ments on stage such as 2 tim­pani, 2 bass drums, 8 gongs, cym­bals etc. .In ref­er­ence to the title, it was a chal­lenge to shape the idea of​fight­ing squares and cir­cles. Elsewhere a canon of cir­cles can be heard and in still oth­er places you hear har­mon­ic or melod­ic squares.The strug­gle for a sense of free­dom, nat­u­ral­ness and direct­ness is cen­tral to all her com­po­si­tions. By also using Pi at times for the rhyth­mic orga­ni­za­tion, a sense of unpre­dictabil­i­ty and free­dom nat­u­ral­ly aris­es. Sometimes that free­dom is not­ed tight­ly, some­times a lit­tle less tight­ly to com­plete­ly free.
