Squaring the Circle is a musical answer on Pi, a key work by artist Johan de Wilde and part of the S.M.A.K. collection. It is a piece for 4 percussionists and electronics.H.V.H. manipulated Pi by using the sequence of numbers mainly to create chaos and unpredictability.Visually there is a link with the vertical aspect of Johan De Wilde’s work through the choice of a set of tubular bells per player and a reference to the title through the large number of round instruments on stage such as 2 timpani, 2 bass drums, 8 gongs, cymbals etc. .In reference to the title, it was a challenge to shape the idea offighting squares and circles. Elsewhere a canon of circles can be heard and in still other places you hear harmonic or melodic squares. The struggle for a sense of freedom, naturalness and directness is central to all her compositions. By also using Pi at times for the rhythmic organization, a sense of unpredictability and freedom naturally arises. Sometimes that freedom is noted tightly, sometimes a little less tightly to completely free.
