Qu'est-ce qu'un phénomène technique en préhistoire ? Un simple fait technique ou un bouc émissaire sur lequel une histoire des techniques devient possible ? L'ouvrage s'interroge sur les conditions de possibilité d'un discours mûr du passé. Eric Boëda dépasse la spécialité de la technologie lithique pour faire émerger comme une voix forte et scientifique un sujet largement oublié dans les études humanistes des techniques: le temps, la durée et ses effets sur nos objets de connaissance. S'il y a un peu plus de trente ans, il fallait se donner les moyens de reconnaître ce que la typologie nous montrait vaguement, l'auteur mène aujourd'hui une archéologie du Levallois, en termes d'épistémologie historique, afin de rompre avec la naïveté initiale de la reconnaissance typo-technologique et techno-économique du Levallois qui survit à ce jour, et de proposer une nouvelle épistémologie résolument consciente des limites gnoséologiques de la discipline.

Bone tool studies are at a crossroads. A current path is to go beyond the concatenation of methods or concepts borrowed from other disciplines and aim instead at a truly integrated approach that is more in line with the objectives of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. The papers in this volume follow this direction by adopting various forms of dialogue and integration between old and new methods and approaches, including technological analysis, usewear analysis, typology, zooarchaeology, stable isotope analysis, experimental archaeology or spatial analysis. They represent a mixture of methodological issues, case studies, and discussions of larger cultural and historical phenomena that span thousands of years and many parts of the World, from South Asia to the Near East and Europe, and from North to South America. The synergies deriving from these multi-perspective approaches lead to the repeated identification of diverse social aspects of past societies, including the identification of general social contexts of bone tool production and use, transmission of knowledge, the symbolic dimensions of artifacts, and intergroup relations as well as warfare and state formation processes.All these papers grew out of communications presented at the 13th meeting of the Worked Bone Research Group (WBRG) on October 7th-13th, 2019, at the Département d'anthropologie, Université de Montréal, Canada. The WBRG is an official working group of the International Council for Archaeozoology (ICAZ) dealing with the study of worked faunal remains from archaeological sites.

The INVALSI Statistical Service followed up, on this premise, with the organization of the IV Seminar “INVALSI data: a tool for teaching and scientific research”. The Institute’s databases, in fact, allow researchers and teachers to investigate in depth the theme of education in schools from different points of view and the event allows them to participate in a lively confrontation on the subject. The authors of the contributions collected in this volume investigate in depth the characteristics of students, schools and society. This book focuses on South American archaeology and its contributions to the broader global archaeological discussion in theory, methods and new interpretations of the archaeological record. These include discussions on human peopling and colonization of the continent, domestication of plants and emergence of complex societies.
