"This book presents a comprehensive and systematic picture of Charles Peirce's ethics and aesthetics, arguing that Peirce established a normative framework for the study of right conduct and good ends. It also connects Peirce's normative thought to contemporary debates in ethical theory. Peirce sought to articulate the relation among logic as right thinking, ethics as good conduct and, in an unorthodox sense of aesthetics, the pursuit of ends that are fine and worthy. Each plays an important role in ethical life. Once aesthetics has determined what makes an end worthy and admirable, and ethics determines which are good and right to pursue, logical and scientific reasoning is employed to figure the most likely means to attain those ends. Ethics does the additional duty of ensuring that the means conform to ideals of conduct. In the process, Peirce develops an interesting theory of moral motivation, an account of moral reasoning, moral truth, and a picture of what constitutes a moral community. Charles Peirce on Ethics, Aesthetics and the Normative Sciences will be of interest to scholars and students working on Peirce, American philosophy, and metaethics"--

"Cognitive Film and Media Ethics provides a grounding in the use of cognitive science to address key questions in film, television and screen media ethics. This book extends past works in cognitive media studies to answer normative and ethically prescriptive questions: what could make media morally good or bad, and what, then, are the respective responsibilities of media producers and consumers? Moss-Wellington makes a primary claim that normative propositions are a kind of rigour, in that they force media theorists to draw more active ought conclusions from descriptive is arguments. Cognitive Film and Media Ethics presents the rigours of normative reasoning, cognitive science and consequentialist ethics as complementary, arguing that each seeks progressive elaboration on their own models of causality, and causal projections are crucial for any reflection on our moral responsibilities in the world. A hermeneutics of "ethical cognitivism" is applied in the latter half of the book, with essays each addressing a different case study in film, television, news and social media: cinema that sets out to inspire moral dissonance in the viewer, satirical and humorous depictions of family drama in film and television, the politics of the romantic comedy, formal aspects of screen media bullying in an era dubbed the "television renaissance," and contemporary problems in the conflation of news and social media. Cognitive Film and Media Ethics synthesises current research in social psychology, anthropology, memory studies, emotion and cognition, personality and media selection, and evolutionary biology, integrating wide-ranging concepts from the various disciplines that make up cognitive theory to provide new vantages on the applied ethics of film and screen media"--

The work of Michel Foucault has had a huge influence on contemporary philosophy, but one thing it lacks is a normative ethical framework. Seeking to construct an ethics consistent with Foucault's core postulates, this study advances the concept of 'life continuance', an approach it contrasts with a range of other, established systems.

This title provides a new way of understanding queer culture. The frameworks offered by queer theory - steeped in philosophical, theoretical and political commitments to 'difference' - have obscured the important investments in 'sameness' that have been central to queer history. 'Same Old' dwells on these investments and elucidates their significance.

This book advances the theorization of normativity as a key concept in language and sexuality studies, bringing together some of the author⁰́₉s previous work with new material for a comprehensive exploration of the influence of normativity on the relationship between language and sexuality. The first section of the book outlines fundamental areas of inquiry in language and sexuality studies today, with a focus on queer linguistic inquiry, and elucidates the book⁰́₉s theoretical frameworks around normativity. Chapters in the section reflect on the ways in which normativity shapes sexuality-related language, how language is employed to convey sexual normativities, and on queer linguistic challenges for the use of research methods in the discipline through a discussion of their implementation in corpus linguistics. The second part of the book builds on these theoretical foundations by featuring seven case studies that illustrate a diverse range of methods and language data, with a concluding chapter considering the implications of their findings for furthering theoretical debates and future research on normativity in language and sexuality studies. This volume will be of interest to scholars in language and sexuality, language and gender, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, applied linguistics, and corpus linguistics.

Homelessness appears as a marginal topic not only in society but also in research. This book brings the coping practices of homeless women and men into focus by implementing an explorative and reconstructive approach that addresses the inherent logic of the everyday practices of homeless women and men. The aim of the book is a multi-perspective view and discussion on the significance of the findings on the coping practices of homeless women and men.
