The Goektepe marbles, white, black and two-toned, corroborated by archaeological studies and evidences and by scientific archaeometrical studies have been published in several previous paper on the most renowned international journals, but the idea to publish a monographic volume is based on the suggestion that this kind of publication can emphasize the importance of the Goektepe marble, in fact, the new Roman imperial sculptural marble. The large and intensive field research changed completely our knowledge about Roman marble quarries in ancient Asia Minor, due to the unexpected discovery of more than 30 exploitation sites of roman times. The importance of these quarries consists in the fact that the produced marbles were all intended to be export marbles to be destined not only to other foreign cities of the Roman Empire, but mainly to Rome.

This magnificent book sheds new light on the celebration and uses of marble in art and literature and on the iconic potential of the stone. With 240 color illustrations, it showcases the marble cladding of architecture, the carving of marble and painting on stone, their political and philosophical connotations, and the de- and re-materialising of marble made possible by digital technology. Marble has been a material of choice and a subject of reflection for millennia. Its geology, history, and economics are well known, but its aesthetics remain understudied. While the iconology of materials highlights their semantic properties, this volume contributes to a historical phenomenology and anthropology of materials. It brings together theoretical propositions and empirical case studies from Late Antiquity to the present.

"In an effort to demonstrate the (im)practicalities of John's command for withdrawal (18:4), this book reconstructs the marble economy of Roman Ephesus and reads Revelation through the daily lives of its workers. It concludes that John's call for zero cultural participation is utterly devastating for its workers"--

"This volume contains 14 contributions that were presented during a workshop in 2019 in Trier. The aim of this international meeting was to create a platform for the exchange among scientists with the research focus on the interior decorations (wall and floor incrustations, mosaics, paintings, stucco and sculpture) of late-antique Roman palaces and villas, mainly those in imperial possession, but also of other contemporaneous palatial building complexes, luxurious villas and houses, which are relevant for comparison due to their rich furnishings and size. The articles in this book cover a number of sites in different regions of the Roman Empire: imperial palaces in Trier, Milano, Thessaloniki, Sirmium, Felix Fomuliana, Rome and Ravenna, luxurious villas and houses in Pfalzel, Carranque, Apollonia (Libya) and other places. The authors illustrate the particularities of the interior décor, influenced by both local tastes and the fashion from Rome, as well as by the availability and affordability of precious materials. Special attention is paid to wall and floor incrustations, since marmora like hardly any other material stand for the luxury and splendor and can be found in all late-antique buildings of importance and rank, here predominantly in the representative apsidal halls"--
