This book focuses on the culture of resistance of enslaved women and men based on the classifieds published in newspapers in Louisiana, Jamaica and South Carolina during the second half of the era of the Atlantic Revolutions. In a few lines, they announced their escape from the slavery framework and revealed their desire not to be victims. Drawing on socio-cultural history and American studies, this work proposes to re-evaluate a narrative genre - the small advertisement of flight - and a form of resistance - the flight. It answers two big questions: how to understand and evaluate these thousands of announcements which mentioned the absence, the tricks and the tactics of people enslaved but choosing resistance? What did the act of fleeing mean to them?

Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. When Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape. Though they manage to find a station and head north, they are being hunted. Their first stop is South Carolina, in a city that initially seems like a haven. But the city's placid surface masks an insidious scheme designed for its black denizens. And even worse: Ridgeway, the relentless slave catcher, is close on their heels.

Running from Bondage tells the compelling stories of enslaved women, who comprised one-third of all runaways, and the ways in which they fled or attempted to flee bondage during and after the Revolutionary War. Karen Cook Bell's enlightening and original contribution to the study of slave resistance in eighteenth-century America explores the individual and collective lives of these women and girls of diverse circumstances, while also providing details about what led them to escape. She demonstrates that there were in fact two wars being waged during the Revolutionary Era: a political revolution for independence from Great Britain and a social revolution for emancipation and equality in which Black women played an active role. Running from Bondage broadens and complicates how we study and teach this momentous event, one that emphasizes the chances taken by these 'Black founding mothers' and the important contributions they made to the cause of liberty.
