"The original edition of Salonnières, Furies, and Fairies, published in 2005, was a pathbreaking work of early modern literary history, exploring women's role in the rise of the fairy tale and their use of this new genre to carve out roles as major contributors to the literature of their time. This new edition, with a new introduction and a forward by acclaimed scholar Allison Stedman, emphasizes the scholarly legacy of Anne Duggan's original work, and its continuing field-changing implications. The book studies the works of two of the most prolific seventeenth-century women writers, Madeleine de Scudéry and Marie-Catherine d'Aulnoy. Analyzing their use of the novel, the chronicle, and the fairy tale, Duggan examines how Scudéry and d'Aulnoy responded to and participated in the changes of their society, but from different generational and ideological positions. This study also takes into account the history of the salon, an unofficial institution that served as a locus for elite women's participation in the cultural and literary production of their society. In order to highlight the debates that emerged with the increased participation of aristocratic women within the public sphere, the book also explores the responses of two academicians, Nicolas Boileau and Charles Perrault"--

This exciting new anthology gathers together Puerto Rican folktales that were passed down orally for generations before finally being transcribed beginning in 1914 by the team of famous anthropologist Franz Boas. These charming tales give readers a window into the imaginations and aspirations of Puerto Rico’s peasants, the Jíbaro. Some stories provide a distinctive Caribbean twist on classic tales including “Snow White” and “Cinderella.” Others fictionalize the lives of local historical figures, such as infamous pirate Roberto Cofresí, rendered here as a Robin Hood figure who subverts the colonial social order. The collection also introduces such beloved local characters as Cucarachita Martina, the kind cockroach who falls in love with Ratoncito Pérez, her devoted mouse husband who brings her delicious food. Including a fresh English translation of each folktale as well as the original Spanish version, the collection also contains an introduction from literary historian Rafael Ocasio that highlights the historical importance of these tales and the Jíbaro cultural values they impart. These vibrant, funny, and poignant stories will give readers unique insights into Puerto Rico’s rich cultural heritage. How have the fairy tales of different cultures changed over the centuries? What do they tell us about our fears and hopes? In a work that spans 2,500 years these ambitious questions are addressed by over 50 experts, each contributing their overview of a theme applied to a period in history. With the help of a broad range of case material they illustrate broad trends and nuances of the fairy tale in Western culture from antiquity to the present. Individual volume editors ensure the cohesion of the whole, and to make it as easy as possible to use, chapter titles are identical across each of the volumes. This gives the choice of reading about a specific period in one of the volumes, or following a theme across history by reading the relevant chapter in each of the six.

"In this book the visual artist Natalie Frank interprets eight tales by Madame d'Aulnoy, a seventeenth-century French pioneer of the fairy-tale genre. D'Aulnoy is thought to have influenced the development of the literary fairy tale in France and beyond. The tales were written as entertainment for the salons of the time: many contain subtle criticisms of French royalty and aristocrats as well as of enforced social and sexual roles. Her work has been translated into English in the past, but rarely outside of anthologies that include other authors. Frank chose to make d'Aulnoy's tales the subject of this book because "many of her heroines' journeys and conflicts have not changed," she writes. "A suitor's arrogance can destroy happiness; the power of kindness and wiliness, combined with perseverance, triumphs; jealousy poisons families and separates lovers." Frank is deeply interested in the role of women in fairy tales. D'Aulnoy, she says, used her talent to both imagine and inhabit worlds in which women could exercise agency. Aiming to "bridge the gap between fine art and illustration," Frank brings a striking, distinctive style to d'Aulnoy's tales through an integration of art and text. Allegorical, energetic, sometimes grotesque, Frank's art is the focus of this book, accompanied by contemporary English translations of the tales by Jack Zipes, a renowned expert on fairy tales. The book also includes a short essay by the artist on her approach to illustrating the tales, and a general introduction to d'Aulnoy and her work by Zipes"--
