The capacity to symbolize (symbolization) and the use of symbols (symbolism) are fundamental to every aspect of human life. The Oxford Handbook of Human Symbolic Evolution investigates how symbolization evolved in human evolution and how symbolism is expressed across the various areas of human life. Written by world-leading experts, thirty-nine topical chapters are grouped into six thematic parts that respectively focus on epistemological, psychological, anthropological, ethological, linguistic, and social-technological aspects of human symbolic evolution. Problems addressed include how human symbolic evolution is studied; how symbolization develops during the human life course; how being in a world constructed through symbols underlies different lifeways; how human symbol use compares to symbol use of other primates; how language evolved from postulated protolanguage; and how socio-technological transformations redefine the very nature of human symbolism and of human evolution. The 'Pictograms, Signs of Life, Emojis: The Society of Signs' catalogue explores the questions: What objectives, and hopes are linked to the development of the modern language of images, including emojis? To which issues of their time are they each reacting to? Do they expand our possibilities of expression or do they limit them by defining stereotypes? The focus of this catalogue is on lexicons and systems of pictorial signs devised by designers and artists like Gerd Arntz, Marie and Otto Neurath, Otl Aicher, Yukio Ota or Wolfgang Schmidt and others. The Resurrection Plate, a Late Classic Maya dish, is decorated with an arresting scene. The Maize God, assisted by two other deities, emerges reborn from a turtle shell. At the center of the plate, in the middle of the god’s body and aligned with the point of emergence, there is a curious sight: a small, neatly drilled hole. Art historian Andrew Finegold explores the meanings attributed to this and other holes in Mesoamerican material culture, arguing that such spaces were broadly understood as conduits of vital forces and material abundance, prerequisites for the emergence of life. Beginning with, and repeatedly returning to, the Resurrection Plate, this study explores the generative potential attributed to a wide variety of cavities and holes in Mesoamerica, ranging from the perforated dishes placed in Classic Maya burials, to caves and architectural voids, to the piercing of human flesh. Holes are also discussed in relation to fire, based on the common means through which both were produced: drilling. Ultimately, by attending to what is not there, Vital Voids offers a fascinating approach to Mesoamerican cosmology and material culture.
