Abstract

This text tackles the question of how countries achieve rural development and offers a new way of thinking about East Asia's political economy that challenges the developmental state paradigm. Through a comparison of Taiwan (1950s-1970s), South Korea (1950s-1970s), and China (1980s-2000s), the book shows that different types of development outcomes-improvements in agricultural production, rural living standards, and the village environment - were realized to different degrees, at different times, and in different ways. The book argues that rural modernization campaigns, defined as policies demanding high levels of mobilization to effect dramatic change, played a central role in the region and that divergent development outcomes can be attributed to the interplay between campaigns and institutions.

Abstract

This book analyses the urbanisation of rural China in the period of the country’s reform and opening-up based on an investigation of five villages in the Pearl River Delta region, analysing progress, problems and future prospects in the light of long-term investigations on the ground and follow-up fieldwork.Drawing on a vast body of data obtained from participation observation, interviews, archival documents, questionnaires and oral histories, the author charts the trajectory of urbanisation as rural landscapes, governance models, social structures and development dynamics have morphed into urban phenomena. Stimulated by outside capital and pro-growth policies, each of the five villages has undergone a distinct economic, social, institutional, cultural and demographic transformation while facing challenges and opportunities such as land requisition, residential areas with a strong concentration of migrants, changing power relations between state and local community, the influence of traditional lineage and clan structures and quandaries over identity. The book will appeal to scholars and students of sociology and Chinese Studies as well as general readers interested in contemporary China and Chinese urbanisation.

Abstract

"Despite the persistence of poverty in Mozambique important investments have been made in rural areas, at the level of extractive industry or agribusiness, resulting in both transformation of these areas and a new set of tensions and conflicts related to land tenure, population resettlement or general livelihoods. At the same time Mozambican rural landscape is dominated by smallholders, whose livelihoods depend on farming and a mix of non-farming activities, and are often extremely vulnerable to shocks and pressure over resources. In this scenario, new civil society organizations emerge - and often stumble in the interests of local political, administrative and economic powers - creating fresh social conflicts. Transformations of the Rural Spaces in Mozambique examines the processes of transformation in a diversity of settings, bringing to the fore discussions on aspects related to the associational life; impacts of large-scale industries; relations between state and non-state actors; issues related to land; and the transformation of agriculture. With contributions from both Mozambican and non-Mozambican scholars, with different disciplinary backgrounds and approaches, this book provides an interdisciplinary perspective of how Mozambique has been characterized by profound changes in the rural milieu."--

Abstract

Medical mineralogy and geochemistry constitute an important field, yet little attention has been paid to it by scientists, administrators, or the public. The aims of this book are: (a) to focus on a selection of current challenges and research opportunities and (b) to encourage knowledge transfer between geochemists and mineralogists whose work concerns medical problems and medical scientists who study problems surrounding biominerals and geomaterials. This book covers a variety of novel approaches, tools and techniques, and scenarios of contamination in water and wastewater, and is a key resource for policymakers and environmental scientists working hard to address environmental pollutants. The key features are: state-of-the-art techniques for the assessment and remediation of heavy metals, presenting the interdisciplinary impacts of heavy metals, including those on human health, ecosystems and water quality, and including various contamination indices, such as contamination factor, geoaccumulation index, enrichment factor, pollution index and ecological risk index.

This text establishes a novel behavioural theory of economic development to illustrate that differences in human behaviour across cities and regions, both individually and collectively, are a significant deep-rooted cause of uneven development within and across nations.
