Examines a host of rock art sites from Nova Scotia to Maryland Rock art, petroglyphs, and pictographs have been made by indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Images have been found on bedrock, cliff faces, ridge tops, and boulders and in rock shelters. Some rock surfaces are covered with abstract and geometric designs such as concentric circles, zigzag lines, grids, and cross-hatched and ladder-like patterns. Others depict humans, footprints and handprints, mammals, serpents, and mythic creatures. All were meticulously pecked, incised or painted. This ancient art form connects us to Native Americans' past, traditions, world views, and sacred places. Rock Art in an Indigenous Landscape: From Atlantic Canada to Chesapeake Bay is the culmination of the research of preeminent rock art scholar Edward J. Lenik. Here, he profiles more than 64 examples of rock art in varied locations from Nova Scotia to Maryland. Chapters are organized geographically and lead the reader through coastal sites, rivers and streams, lakes and ponds, and upland sites. Lenik discusses the rock art examples in the context of the indigenous landscape, noting the significance of the place of discovery. Coverage includes a meticulous description of the design or motif and suggestions of time frame, artist-makers, and interpretations. Where possible, indigenous views on the artifacts enrich the narrative. Other invaluable elements are a discussion of how to identify indigenous rock art; a glossary of rock art terms and features and archaeological culture periods; an up-to-date bibliography; and an appendix of a number of reported but unconfirmed petroglyph sites in the regions.

This volume, part of the wider EES publications on the site of Gebel el-Silsila, covers the results of the 1983 season at nearby Wadi Shatt el-Rigal, famous for its abundance of epigraphic records from the late Eleventh Dynasty. The reason for their presence in this remote site has remained an intriguing problem that has been much debated. Besides the three well-known royal reliefs of Mentuhotep II and Mentuhotep III, the mission under Ricardo Caminos and assisted by Jürgen Osing documented more than 800 inscriptions and rock-drawings, which until now have remained only partially published. Follow-up work in 2004 has allowed for checks on the previous work, which can now be made fully accessible.

The volume covers a huge region of East Siberia, considering prehistoric ethno-cultural and social processes through the development of rock art styles and traditions. This study addresses the questions of why rock art is created, why specific styles and traditions emerge and why changes in rock art occur. These questions are explored through anthropological perspectives on ethnicity, identity, and symbolism. A reader will find a comprehensive overview of the developments of rock art research in Siberia as well as detailed accounts of the regional archaeology in the Bronze/Iron ages, the Neolithic, and partially the Late Paleolithic. Importantly, this study is primarily fieldwork-based, presenting information on 108 rock art sites in Yakutia and Trans-Baikal. This work makes a major contribution to Siberian and global rock art research and suggests new directions for future rock art research.

"Ontologies of Rock Art is the first publication exploring a wide range of ontological approaches to rock art interpretation, constituting the basis for ground-breaking studies on Indigenous knowledges, relational metaphysics, and rock imageries. The book contributes to the growing body of research on the ontology of images by focusing on five main topics: ontology as a theoretical framework; the development of new concepts and methods for an ontological approach to rock art; the examination of the relationships between ontology, images and Indigenous knowledges; the development of relational models for the analysis of rock images; and the impact of ontological approaches on different rock art traditions across the world. Generating new avenues of research in ontological theory, political ontology and rock art research, this collection will be relevant to archaeologists, anthropologists, and philosophers. In the context of an increasing interest in Indigenous ontologies, the volume will also be of interest to scholars in Indigenous Studies"--

Norbert Aujoulat is head of the cave art section at the National Prehistory Centre in Perigueux (Ministry of Culture and Communication/Department of Archaeology). The descriptive analysis of a prehistoric painting or engraving depends, to a great extent, on its reproduction, which, in its turn, depends on a specific methodology and appropriate material. This book is a synthesis of earlier work dealing with reproduction techniques and is also the result of several years of personal research into the photographic recording of data and their Processing by computer in the laboratory. Highly didactic, it is intended as a practical manual, indispensable for any research in the field of cave art.
