Plus de trente ans après Le Monde comme volonté et comme représentation, Schopenhauer propose une reprise dispersée mais fidèle des thèses de son œuvre maîtresse avec Sur la religion et les Paralipomena (1851). En rapportant le cœur même de sa métaphysique à la doctrine de la transmigration des âmes, Schopenhauer prend position contre tout dogme religieux d'un commencement absolu du monde et contre celui de l'existence d'un dieu personnel. Il critique donc le judaïsme et le christianisme comme religions théistes, et c'est à la religion de l'Inde ancienne qu'il arrime définitivement sa théorie qui, comme elle, prône la soustraction au cycle des renaissances. Le bouddhisme, en particulier, représente pour Schopenhauer l'attestation la plus éclatante de sa métaphysique dans le champ religieux : il y rencontre une religion où chaque individu, à l'image du Bouddha, peut mettre un terme à l'affirmation de la volonté dans le monde, et atteindre par là à sa propre négation - le « nirvana ».Ce texte, qui devait enfin apporter un relatif succès à son auteur, est l'un des dialogues fondateurs entre les pensées occidentale et orientale.

Ästhetische Formen sind Kristallisationspunkte kultureller, religiöser und politischer Konflikte. Dies gilt, sofern sie religiös determinierten und legitimierten Bedeutungssystemen angehören. Sie stehen im Horizont bestimmter Klassifikationsschemata, epistemischer Unterscheidungen, unterschiedlicher Konzeptionen von Sprache und sozialer Normativität. Der Band fragt nach der Rolle und Funktion »autonomer« Kunst im Säkularisierungsprozess. Dieser ist nicht zuletzt durch die insistierende Präsenz christlicher Referenzen in der modernen europäischen Kunst gekennzeichnet. In Frage steht damit aber, dass die Kunst der Moderne sich in einem a-religiösen oder post-religiösen Raum bewegt. Umgekehrt liegt die Vermutung nahe, dass die säkulare Signatur der modernen Kunst erst vor dem Hintergrund des Christentums verständlich wird.

In Matarenda/Talents in Zimbabwean Pentecostalism , the fourteen contributors to this multidisciplinary collection reflect on how Pentecostalism contributes to the empowerment of marginalised societies, how it empowers women in particular through the matarenda (talents) principles, and how it contributes to the development of wider society. All but three of the authors are Zimbabwean Pentecostals. The book deals with such subjects as gender equality, economics and finance, poverty alleviation and sustainable development, education, and entrepreneurship. A remarkable independent Zimbabwean church has harnessed biblical principles from the Parable of the Talents to empower women and those marginalised by economic disasters. It is particularly relevant for understanding the potential of African Pentecostalism in dealing with social and economic challenges.

This book consists of seven chapters on the subject of poetry and itinerancy within the religious traditions of India, Tibet, and Japan from ancient to modern times. The chapters look, each from a different angle, at how itinerancy is reflected in religious poetry, what are the purposes of the wanderers' poems or songs, and how the wandering poets relate to local communities, sacred geography, and institutionalized religion. We encounter priest-poets in search of munificent patrons, renouncers and yogins who sing about the bliss and hardship of wandering alone in the wilderness, Hindu pilgrims and opponents of pilgrimage, antinomian Buddhist-Tantric poets from Bengal, and the originator of the haiku. We are led along roads travelled by many, as well as paths tread by few.
