"This book claims a political value for olfactory artworks by situating them squarely in the contemporary moment of various forms of political resistance. Each chapter presents the current research and art practices of an international group of artists and writers from the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, Thailand, Sweden, and the Netherlands. The book brings together new thinking on the potential for olfactory art to critique and produce modes of engagement that challenge the still-powerful hegemonic realities of the twenty-first century, particularly the dominance of vision as opposed to other sensory modalities. The book will be of interest to scholars working in contemporary art, art history, visual culture, olfactory studies, performance studies, and politics of activism"--

This volume presents novel cross-linguistic insights into how olfactory experiences are expressed in typologically (un-)related languages both from a synchronic and from a diachronic perspective. It contains a general introduction to the topic and fourteen chapters based on philological investigation and thorough fieldwork data from Basque, Beja, Fon, Formosan languages, Hebrew, Indo-European languages, Japanese, Kartvelian languages, Purepecha, and languages of northern Vanuatu. Topics discussed in the individual chapters involve, inter alia, lexical olfactory repertoires and naming strategies, non-literal meanings of olfactory expressions and their semantic change, reduplication, colexification, mimetics, and language contact. The findings provide the reader with a range of fascinating facts about perception description, contribute to a deeper understanding of how olfaction as an understudied sense is encoded linguistically, and offer new theoretical perspectives on how some parts of our cognitive system are verbalized cross-culturally. This volume is highly relevant to lexical typologists, historical linguists, grammarians, and anthropologists.

"Fleeting - Scents in Colour explores odours and the sense of smell as portrayed in Dutch and Flemish art of the seventeenth century - from fragrant flowers and perfumes to body odours and stinking canals. It is about the sensory role played by smells in daily life, about odours and health, about spices and other scents from far-off lands, and about lost 'smellscapes' of the past. But how were odours and the sense of smell portrayed? What meanings were attached to smells and what did they call to mind? Can the life of those times be captured in smells? We are surrounded by countless odours that vanish over time yet exert a strong (often subconscious) infleunce on our emotions. There are just as many stories to be told about the invisible and intangible phenomenon of smell as there are about art. Using our sense of smell while looking at art can open up a whole new world"--Page 4 of cover.

Equal parts design and DIY, At Home with Fragrance will teach you which fragrances work best for each room, how to interpret your distinct design style into fragrance, and (the best part!) how to make candles, room sprays, and incense with your own custom scents. The design and fragrances featured in this book are inspired by the authors home state of California: organic and relaxed elements, as well as scents drawn from nature, are the hallmarks of P.F.s design ethos. Scent is the perfect way to express your unique design sense--and the art of making your own fragrances and candles offers an affordable DIY approach.

Smell is one of the most sensitive senses and is closely connected with emotions. Everyone has experienced a moment where a scent changed their mood and brought up memories. In this book monitoring of the effect of aromas on consumer emotions is described. It starts with a general overview of the role of scents in marketing and the use of neuroscience tools in monitoring the impact of the stimuli on consumer emotions. Tools used by the authors are a consumer neuroscience tool - electroencephalography (EEG), a biometric method that monitors the galvanic skin response or skin perspiration (GSR), and a traditional data collection method - a questionnaire. With these tools, consumer response to three selected scents were monitored. One of the initial scents was selected and tested under ‘normal’ restaurant conditions. The authors describe how the information was obtained, and how the effect on consumer emotions was determined. 'The use of consumer neuroscience in aroma marketing' concludes with recommendations to improve the effectiveness of aromatisation in practice.

Welke betekenis hechtte men aan geur?
