The book presents the characteristics of meadow and herb plants occurring in the Upper Vistula Valley. The significance of the vegetation in nature protection has been determined by the assessment of the share of protected vascular plant species and alien plant species which pose a threat to the phytocoenoses under investigation. Plant communities have been identified as Natura 2000 natural habitats and it has been proposed to create new protected areas to preserve the best-developed patches of vegetation studied.

"Rethinking Wilderness and the Wild: Conflict, Conservation and Co-existence examines the complexities surrounding the concept of wilderness. Contemporary wilderness scholarship has tended to fall into two categories: the so-called 'fortress conservation' and 'co-existence' schools of thought. This book, contending that this polarisation has led to a silencing and concealment of alternative perspectives and lines of enquiry, extends beyond these confines and in particular steers away from the dilemmas of paradise or paradox in order to advance an intellectual and policy agenda of plurality and diversity rather than of prescription and definition. Drawing on case studies from Australia, Aoteoroa/New Zealand, the United States and Iceland, and explorations of embodied experience, creative practice, philosophy, and First Nations land management practices, the assembled chapters examine wilderness ideals, conflicts and human-nature dualities afresh, and examine co-existence and conservation in the Anthropocene in diverse ontological and multidisciplinary ways. Est-elle capable, pour la sauvegarder, de s’émanciper d’une tradition philosophique dualiste qui, en séparant l’humanité de la nature, érige la première en entité la plus significative de l’univers et, au contraire, enferme la seconde dans une condition d’objet inerte ? Une telle vision du monde légitime en effet la domination et la maîtrise par l’humanité des éléments naturels et explique que les objectifs du droit de l’environnement se contentent, le plus souvent, de promouvoir une gestion soutenable des ressources naturelles.À rebours de cet héritage dualiste, cet ouvrage propose d’étudier les fondements éthiques permettant, en redéfinissant la relation humanité/nature, de concevoir une politique de préservation de la nature sauvage dans l’Union européenne.La première partie de l’ouvrage décrit comment une tradition de pensée naturaliste – fondée sur les croyances païennes puis sur les systèmes épicurien et spinoziste – s’est toujours maintenue en Occident. Elle démontre la rémanence d’un naturalisme éthique selon lequel la nature est naturante et l’humanité se doit de vivre en harmonie avec elle. Aux États-Unis, l’éthique de la wilderness – qui reprend ces thèses – a conduit à l’adoption d’une véritable politique de préservation. Sur ce modèle, au début du XXe siècle, les États européens ont pareillement créé de nombreux parcs nationaux qui ont – ponctuellement – permis de sauvegarder des espaces de nature sauvage.La deuxième partie de l’ouvrage retrace l’émergence, dans les années 1970, des écosophies contemporaines.Ces éthiques naturalistes prônent un nouveau rapport humanité/nature en affirmant, d’une part, la valeur intrinsèque de la nature sauvage et en se focalisant, d’autre part, sur l’interconnexion des formes de vie au sein d’un tout complexe et harmonieux. Jusqu’à présent et malgré quelques initiatives récentes, cette résurgence de la nature sauvage n’a eu qu’un impact modéré sur le fonctionnement du réseau Natura 2000 qui – obéissant à une logique de développement durable – ne protège qu’indirectement la naturalité des sites qu’il abrite.La troisième partie de l’ouvrage met en évidence la nécessité pour les pouvoirs publics, face aux dangers de l’érosion de la biodiversité, d’oeuvrer à une réhabilitation de la nature sauvage. Elle implique de redéfinir les objectifs du réseau Natura 2000 pour qu’ils visent la mise en place d’une politique de préservation ambitieuse axée sur le ré-ensauvagement de vastes milieux naturels. Au-delà, la proposition de consacrer des droits au profit de la nature sauvage apparaît comme une étape décisive de ce processus de réhabilitation. Elle validerait juridiquement la thèse éthique de la valeur intrinsèque de la nature sauvage et conduirait à ce que ses intérêts soient mieux pris en considération.
