The Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane is a fictional psychiatric institution. It is where Dr. Hannibal Lecter, the main character ina series of suspense novels by Thomas Harris, has been incarcerated for avery long time. Dr. Lecter is highly intelligent, erudite, and intellectual, but atthe same time devoid of empathy and afflicted with a macabre abnormalityin that, in terms of his preferred diet, he is partial to human flesh. Hence,he has acquired the nickname Hannibal the Cannibal. Hannibal Lecter iswithout doubt one of the most notorious serial killers in Western popular culture. For years, he has been locked up in the deepest, darkest cellar inthis establishment, where he receives visits only from mice, rats, and a stoicguard who comes to bring him food. His cell, at the end of the corridor, issmall, four by four meters, with three stone walls, no window, and a wall ofbars on the fourth side. How does Hannibal cope with this situation? How does he manage to counteract total madness and deal with the isolation? Heuses a well-known cognitive technique: he closes his eyes for a few hours aday and enters the palace of his imagination. This palace is imaginary butconstructed in great detail. It is strikingly large, made up of countless rooms,corridors, and halls, with windows opening up views onto all the places thatare important to Hannibal. The walls are adorned with frescos depicting his own memories, fantasies, and dreams for the future – all these scenes havetheir own place in the palace of his imagination and are retrievable down to the smallest detail.

This book is the first comprehensive attempt to identify the deeper causes that have shaped contemporary behaviour patterns and motivations among football fans in Poland. Fan culture in Poland has long been based on a distinctively grassroots, spontaneous movements that ruled out any cooperation with local authorities and sports organizations. The activity of supporter groups has regularly failed to meet the principles set by official bodies, intentionally breaching the moral and legal standards of the day. Based on data derived from ethnographic fieldwork, content analysis of fan journals, magazines, social media and online forums, as well as a wide range of qualitative interviews conducted over the years, the book analyses the ways in which fandom culture in Poland has evolved: from its moderate beginnings in the shadows of a communist regime in the 1970’s, through the anomic, ‘uncivilized’ and pathological decade of the 1990’s, to the peculiar culture based on strong cohesion, capabilities of social mobilization and emerging 'resistance identity' in the 21st century. It thus provides a detailed analysis of Polish fandom’s multi-dimensional structure, and will be of interest to students and academics interested in the growing field of football research, as well as those researching the transformation of Central and Eastern Europe, or more generally in European Studies.

Chinese and Western Literary Influence in Liu Cixin’s Three Body Trilogy examines Liu Cixin’s acclaimed trilogy, a Chinese science fiction epic whose translation is exceedingly popular in the Western world. Will Peyton argues that the ingenuity of Liu’s writing is found in its conscious engagement with translated Western fiction rather than, as one might expect, in Chinese language science fiction of the past. The book illustrates how contemporary Chinese fiction, since the economic opening of China in the late 1980s, is deeply and complexly influenced by various strains in Western literary and intellectual thought, an area that scholars of Chinese literature have tended to neglect. Providing a lucid and succinct close-reading and textual analysis of Three Body trilogy, the book also makes reference to broader ideas and themes in modern Chinese and Western intellectual history.

Raymond Chandler, Romantic Ideology, and the Cultural Politics of Chivalry responds to the general consensus that Philip Marlowe represents a chivalric knight out of romance. The book argues that this commonplace reading requires a stunningly rosy rewriting of Marlowe, knighthood, chivalry, and romance. The book offers a history of the cultural politics of chivalry from the Middle Ages through British Romanticism to the modern United States, exposing the elitism, violent masculinism, racism, and ethno-national othering harbored within. Rizzuto also considers the survival of the chivalric ideology after World War I, and argues that the narrative of the Great War destroying chivalry rewrites the ghastly history of warfare. Touching on Chandler throughout these cultural histories, the book then directly confronts the question of knighthood and romance in the Marlowe novels. Rizzuto identifies an explicit rejection of romance in the service of hardboiled gender, class, and genre norms, including a seldom-remarked pattern of violence against women and sexual assault. The volume concludes by offering some ideas about Chandler’s motivations and the reception of the Marlowe novels. Anthony Dean Rizzuto teaches English at Sonoma State University, USA. He spearheaded The Annotated Big Sleep, a critical edition that places Raymond Chandler’s first novel in its historical, cultural, and literary contexts. He has a PhD in English from the University of Virginia, and degrees in History and Literature from the University of California at Santa Cruz.
