Abstract

The Improvement Plan (better known as PdM, that is Piano di Miglioramento) was introduced in school agenda in 2015. Since then, both teachers and administrative staff have worked in a process of change and enhancement in two main areas: teaching/learning and organization/management ones. Consequently, it began to flourish implementing projects in order to find the best solutions to reach the main school goal: providing the educational success to all students, with respect for their several differences. This book collects papers, submitted at IV edition of the Seminar "INVALSI data: a research and teaching tool" held in Rome in November 2019, by both teachers and researchers to debate and deepen this topic, sharing ideas, suggestions, and experiences. INVALSI data could be a useful tool to find new paths to help schools in a permanent improving process, indeed.

Abstract

One of the main school goals is to assist all students in pursuing a common core of basic targets, with respect for each pupil's ways of learning, especially for the ones who have any special educational need. This book collects papers, submitted at III edition of the Seminar "INVALSI data: a research tool" held in Bari from 26th to 28th October 2018, in order to investigate Italian students' features, such as gender, migrant and socio-economic-cultural backgrounds. Thanks to INVALSI data, researchers and teachers can shed light on differences and similarities among students about their school results and academic achievement. As a Statistical Service, we hope chapters of this could be a useful tool for school research.

Abstract

This is a self-study guide for facilitators of rapid process improvement workshops that helps anyone who feels like they aren't truly gaining the full results of improvement initiatives and kaizen events. They know they can do better, but don't know how. The author, an experienced facilitator in government and nonprofits, speaks to the facilitator through coaching notes and actual workshop documents and techniques so the reader can fully understand how greater results are achieved. This guide takes the reader through a step-by-step path of a newly created workshop agenda. The author has parsed the workshop path into more manageable parts, easier for both the facilitator and the team. These parts split the improvement work into two sections: "removing the unnecessary" and "smoothing out the flow." "Smoothing out the flow" is divided further into: When the work is coming in When the product/person is going through the process How the work is performed In addition, the author includes newly created tools and training content. For example, a data-gathering table points the facilitator to what data need to be collected when. Training for the team includes making sure they understand the structure of a process as well as to instruct them and define how a Lean process actually functions. This distinction is important because all improvements are not necessarily Lean improvements. Several bodies of knowledge are incorporated into this guide--not only Lean and Six Sigma, but internal auditing, organizational development, and statistics. Essentially, this guide includes tips, nuances, and original tools that are missing from the traditional training of facilitators of kaizen events. It provides enough information for the facilitator to think in a creative way.

Abstract

"Look, Listen, Learn, LEAD: A District-Wide Systems Approach to Teaching and Learning in PreK-12 lays out the transformational journey of Hampton City Schools (HCS), an urban school division of 30 schools in southeastern Virginia. Our school district faces numerous challenges, such as 62% of students receiving free and reduced-price lunch and 14% of students holding an IEP, and in 2015-2016, Hampton City Schools' state accreditation rate was approximately half the statewide rate and on a downward trend. In only three years, that was turned around and HCS exceeded the statewide accreditation rate, a more than 100% improvement with 100% of our schools accredited without conditions. We attribute this in large part to our dedicated educators and their implementation of district-wide systems for curriculum, instruction, checking for student understanding, climate, and culture. The goal of this book is to break down the process of what it takes to bring about large-scale educational change that is sustainable. We describe a process for developing a strong mission and vision to undergird the work around a variety of district-wide systems. This book provides insights into how to improve climate and culture, create a guaranteed and viable written curriculum, establish a process for evaluating its implementation, and create a balanced assessment framework to measure student success. Complete with example templates, action plans, and lessons learned, this book is a true example of theory-into-practice to bring about sustained improvement for all learners"--

Abstract

"The BASICS Manual is designed to show personnel at all levels within a manufacturing operations environment that, with easy to understand continuous improvement tools, they can make a difference to operational performance where safety, quality, cost, delivery and people are paramount to business success. The tools and techniques throughout, based upon examples from the authors experience, demonstrate that no matter what industry they can bring the desired added value. This book will help any manufacturing shop floor add value in terms of quality/cost and delivery performance. It will also show how using tools and techniques from the "coal face" out will improve process performance using simple data collection and measurement-not only on outputs, but just as importantly on "critical to quality inputs" such as process parameters and their windows-to deliver the desired output KPI. The power and confidence that this gives to local experts and processing teams enables them to make informed decisions, preventing drifts and non-conforming product: prevention being better than cure. The result of these changes is tangible cultural impact to the shop floor, raising the level at which operating teams work and improving morale. B.A.S.I.C.S will enable staff at all levels to understand their performance measures and produce sustainable results. The book contains practical tools, methods and techniques that have been tried and tested by the author over a successful 30 year career as a contractor transforming performing processes and failing KPIs"--

Abstract

Improve Schools and Transform Education In order for educational systems to change, we must reevaluate deep-seated beliefs about learning, teaching, schooling, and race that perpetuate inequitable opportunities and outcomes. Hatch, Corson, and Gerth van den Berg challenge the narrative when it comes to the "grammar of schooling"--or the conventional structures, practices, and beliefs that define educational experiences for so many children-to cast a new vision of what school could be. The book addresses current systemic problems and solutions as it: Highlights global examples of successful school change Describes strategies that improve educational opportunities and performance Explores promising approaches in developing new learning opportunities Outlines conditions for supporting wide-scale educational improvement.
