L?auteur de cet ouvrage propose un parcours au cœur du quartier le plus central de la ville de Marseille à l?Epoque moderne, qui avait presque entièrement disparu en 1943 pendant la guerre. Elle fait revivre sa trame urbaine à travers laquelle se dresse une variété de bâtiments, édifices religieux et civils, mais aussi maisons d?habitation privées. Grâce au dialogue entre les sources écrites et les fouilles archéologiques, leur diversité de construction, faisant se côtoyer de vastes demeures aux façades richement décorées et des maisons plus modestes, presque toutes alliant lieu d?habitation et de travail apparaît.
