Abstract

Mimesis Nemesis collects more than a hundred iPad drawings by William Ploegaert, created through intense observation, capturing the artist’s extended environment. — “In the opening scene of Tarkovsky’s film Solaris, main character Kris Kelvin explores the natural elements in his garden with the greatest care and attention; a rippling brook with aquatic plants, some trees, flowers, and even a sudden thunderstorm. He experiences all this as if it were his last day. Callously implausible, it actually turns out to be the last time, because 24 hours later, he is on his way to a space station where all kinds of inexplicable things will happen.I recognise this kind of thorough observation. Often, my environment seems to reach me with great intensity, not as if it were the last time, but because it could be the last time. When I draw it, somehow, I part with it.”

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

These projects were designed between 2004 and 2019. Until now, fifteen have been built. Some of them are better known elsewhere than they are in their own neighbourhood. They have double lives – both as the main protagonist of an architectural narrative, and its backdrop. Good architecture has the tendency to fit without posturing, to make the city. In the best case, it survives itself. Every project establishes its frame of references. It represents a set of intentions, both spatial and ideological. To take a position as an architect and make these choices is inevitable. The tools of architecture are limited, but the solutions to particular design issues are endless, and this is what makes all the difference. We do not rely upon specific design methods. Instead, we believe in the consistency of architectural themes.

Abstract

Glenn Sestig, born in 1968 in Ghent, Belgium, graduated from the Henri Van De Velde institute in Antwerp and in 1999 established his practice. From the outset, his work focused on extreme precision, on a construction with such mastery of the architectural line, proportions and perspective that it is easy to forget the careful consideration that will have gone into his design and creation. In addition to the material and its interpretation, transparency and the play of reflection suggest rather than illustrate the endeavors that have resulted in the real grandeur of some projects, primarily places for public use.Glenn Sestig Architects is synonymous with contemporary elegance. Their work can be seen as monolithic and intuitive but always with a strong refined architectural identity. The cohesion or even clash between different exclusive and unique materials elevates this identity. Therefore the architect uses his own method of calculation, a sort of mental model from which flow the intelligence, equilibrium and soul of a place. Each completed work is considered as a minor work of art wherein art, fashion and music are essential sources of inspiration. The architecture is no longer a movement in time but becomes a declaration of a clear architectural vocabulary.

Abstract

“The more I reflect on her work, the more it appears to me as a peculiar form of Land Art”, is how arthistorian Ory Dessau describes the art practice of Marie Cloquet. The artist put together an extensive archive of photographs and uses it time and again to create her monumental landscapes on canvas. She considers the images, both digital and analog, as sketches and sees similarities between her process and that of classical painters. Close to the way in which, for example, the Flemish masters arranged the sketches they made on site, once back in their studios, into new, realistic looking compositions, Cloquet cuts up and mixes her images into independent entities that remain only loosely connected with the real world. After manipulating the photos in the darkroom, she prints them on drawing paper, tears them up and reconstructs them collage-wise, using watercolor paint. The rugged, anonymous worlds that emerge, play with scale, size and perspectives and simultaneously appeal, as places of devastation, to our collective memory. Marie Cloquet says, that at his core, her work is about collateral damage. If initially her pictures, mainly because of the analog production method, remained confined to the black and white spectrum, the artist has recently begun to gradually introduce color in her work. Subtle, pale and sketchy, so that the works tend towards the realm of the suggestive. It is an attempt to place a gentle veil over dramatic footage, to cover confrontational facts on the current state of the world and the human condition with a layer of beauty.

Abstract

Abstract

a+u’s October issue features 18 projects, ranging from private residences to urban plazas, by architect Marie-José Van Hee, whose practice is based in Ghent, Belgium. Guest editor Hera Van Sande notes how Van Hee’s buildings “blend in with their environment as if they have always been there” and her “architectural spaces evoke repose, reflection, serenity, silence.” Working almost entirely in Flanders, Van Hee creates architectural works that are intensely personal, as an extension of her aesthetic passion, which also encompasses cooking, literature, and fashion. The projects presented here all begin with an aerial photograph of the broader site context alongside Van Hee’s sketches. These sketches, or rather black drawings, are layers of pencil lines drawn on top of each other. They communicate the architectural images that Van Hee visualizes as “her hand mediates between the mental images and the spatial projections on a sheet of paper” and “negotiate between her imagination and the constrictions of our physical world while she juggles different scales simultaneously,” as described in the introduction by Sam De Vocht.
