Abstract

The peppermint Initiative was created to overcome the lack of standardization in exhaled breath analysis. It is an inter-analytical platforms-benchmarking study, which was carried out in the OBiAChem laboratory. Concretely, in each analytical platform, the defined peppermint protocol was repeated on the exhaled breath of at least 10 subjects to monitor specific metabolites of the peppermint oil in the exhaled breath. With the resulting data, a statistical analysis will be carried out and should represent the variability range between laboratories and different types of instrumentation. Concerning the OBiAChem laboratory, the exhaled breath was sampled in Tedlar® bags and the target VOCs were analyzed by a TD-GC×GC-HRTOFMS. A previous optimization step on the exhaled breath sampling method was done and this determined the suitable sampling bags for the exhaled breath analysis, 1L Tedlar® bags. The data analysis highlighted that almost all of the monitored metabolites of peppermint oil gave reproducible results leading to the conclusion that the exhaled breath sampling method which was used is a reproducible method.

Abstract

Natural Antioxidants: Innovative Extraction and Application in Foods compiles comprehensive information and recent findings on the extraction of antioxidants from different natural resources and investigates their application in food. The book focuses on different sources of natural antioxidants such as the Hypochaeris and Hyoseris species, pomegranate seed oil, thyme, hemp, coriander, olive mill wastewaters, the edible mushroom Hericium erinaceus, Brewer’s spent grain, broccoli byproducts, cardoon, and Norway spruce bark. Moreover, the effect of different treatments such as blanching, microwave exposure, roasting, and enzymatic browning on the phytochemical content and bioactivity of the extracts is also addressed. Readers will find valuable insights into the impact of extraction methodologies on the bioactivity of the extracts, along with an understanding of the vast potential of natural extracts for the quality of food products. Abstract

Metabolomics is increasingly being used to explore the dynamic responses of living systems in biochemical research. The complexity of the metabolome is outstanding, requiring the use of complementary analytical platforms and methods for its quantitative or qualitative profiling. In alignment with the selected analytical approach and the study aim, sample collection and preparation are critical steps that must be carefully selected and optimized to generate high-quality metabolomic data. This book showcases some of the most recent developments in the field of sample preparation for metabolomics studies. Novel technologies presented include electromembrane extraction of polar metabolites from plasma samples and guidelines for the preparation of biospecimens for the analysis with high-resolution μ magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (HR-μMAS NMR). In the following chapters, the spotlight is on sample preparation approaches that have been optimized for diverse bioanalytical applications, including the analysis of cell lines, bacteria, single spheroids, extracellular vesicles, human milk, plant natural products and forest trees.

The materials published in the Special Issue reflect the real diversity of echinoderm metabolites and cover most of their specific classes and biomedical potential as antioxidant, antiviral, anticancer, and even anticoagulant preparations. The metabolites include sea urchin naphtoquinoid pigments and their semi-synthetic derivatives, sea cucumber triterpene glycosides, esters of polyhydroxysteroids from starfish, sea urchins free sterols, and sea cucumber fucosylated chondroitin sulfates. This Special Issue, “Echinoderm Metabolites: Structure, Functions, and Biomedical Perspectives”, is a collection of articles about different scientific aspects concerning low molecular weight and biopolymer metabolites from echinoderms, including their isolation and chemical structures, biological activities, biosynthesis and evolution, biological functions, and obtaining of semi-synthetic derivatives of biologically active natural products. This Special Issue includes materials about sea urchin naphtoquinoid pigments and their semi-synthetic derivatives, sea cucumber triterpene glycosides, esters of polyhydroxysteroids from starfish, sea urchin free sterols, and sea cucumber fucosylated chondroitin sulfates.

Abstract

Epidemiological evidence from the last fifty years has demonstrated that nutrition plays a decisive role in human health. Eating properly is not only necessary to meet energy demands. It also actively contributes, through both preventive actions and therapeutic effects, to improving human wellness. Nutrition owes its functional role in human health to the biological activity of specific, small dietary molecules. Plants are the most important source of bioactive molecules, and dietary phytochemicals are mainly responsible for the documented protective effects of diets which are rich in plant foods. Dietary phytochemicals have attracted increasing interest in human nutrition research over the past few years due to their ability to exert several biological effects that are potentially useful for human health, In this Special Issue, the biological activity of dietary phytochemicals, either purified or in extracts from plant foods, and their potential effects on human health are addressed and investigated.
