Abstract

Abstract

"Lessons from Lockdown explores the impact of COVID-19 on our schooling systems, on the young people and families that they serve, and on all who work in our schools, and asks what the long-term ramifications might be for the pedagogy and purpose of formal education. Drawing on the voices of over one hundred pupils, parents and professionals, it reveals how teachers, learners and schools are adapting their practice in areas such as curriculum modelling, parental engagement, assessment, home learning, and on-line and blended learning. In this timely new book, Tony Breslin draws on his experience as a teacher, researcher, examiner, school governor and policy influencer to assess what the educational legacy of COVID-19 could be, and the potential that it offers for reframing how we 'do' schooling. He argues that there is much to learn from this tumultuous period and that, post-lockdown, we ought to take advantage of the opportunity that it has offered to produce a more personalised, family-friendly and inclusive approach to schooling, and to learning more broadly. Whatever your place in this landscape, Lessons from Lockdown is a must-read for all concerned about the shape and purpose of schooling systems in mature economies - schooling systems and economies set on recovering from the kind of 'system-shock' that the pandemic has delivered"--

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This book reviews the state of education in Myanmar over the past decade and a half as the country is undergoing profound albeit incomplete transformation. Set within the context of Myanmar's peace process and the wider reforms since 2012, Marie Lall's analysis of education policy and practice serves as a case study on how the reform programme has evolved. Drawing on over 15 years of field research carried out across Myanmar, the book offers a cohesive inquiry into government and non-government education sectors, the reform process, and how the transition has played out across schools, universities and wider society. It casts scrutiny on changes in basic education, the alternative monastic education, higher education and teacher education, and engages with issues of ethnic education and the debate on the role of language and the local curriculum as part of the peace process. In so doing, it gives voice to those most affected by the changing landscape of Myanmar's education and wider reform process: the students and parents of all ethnic backgrounds, teachers, teacher trainees and university staff that are rarely heard. Marie Lall argues that, despite a commitment to greater equality and equity expressed in the Ministry of Education's policy documents, Myanmar has missed a historic opportunity to make use of education reform to engage with deep-seated social injustices. Inequalities persist in the long-term outcomes for poorer sections of society and between the majority Bamars and ethnic nationality communities. This is the portrait of a country constrained by internal tensions and competing international priorities that serve to divert the professed course towards social justice.

Abstract

The post-pandemic world provides all of us with the opportunity to think differently about what we want for society. In Educating Tomorrow, Chris Brown and Ruth Luzmore explore what a post-Covid 'blank slate' education system could look like.

Abstract

"Few institutions in modern society are as significant as universities; and yet our historical and sociological understanding of the role of higher education has not been substantially updated for decades. Revisiting the emergence and transformation of higher education since 1800 using a novel processual approach, this book recognises these developments as having been as central as the industrial and democratic revolutions in constituting the modern world. This new interpretation of the role of universities in contemporary society promises to re-orient our understanding of the importance of higher education in the past and future development of modern societies. It will therefore appeal to scholars of social science and history with interests in social history and social change, education, the professions and inequalities"-- Provided by publisher.
