'The Rise and Fall of the Privatized Pension System in Chile' focuses on the Chilean experience with a privatised pension system since the early 1980 when launched by the Pinochet regime. It explores economic, financial and political economy dimensions of a private pension system based on individual savings capacity implemented in a highly unequal country. The book also highlights the role played by the pension system as a mechanism of savings redistribution from wage earners and the self-employed to the funding of big corporations at home and abroad, in a process intermediated by profit-making pension fund management companies. The book compares the resilience of Chile's private pension system with the reversals of the privatised pension system in recent years in countries of Latin America and Central-Eastern Europe. It outlines a program of structural pension reform towards a more progressive, public-based system.

Chile is a privileged country in terms of water resources, with an average annual runoff of approximately 50,000 m3/person. However, water availability varies enormously in space, as less than 1,000 m3/person are available for more than 50% of the population. The temporal and spatial distribution of water resources is driven by processes highly variables across a country with different climates explained not only by a large range of latitudes (from 17° to 56° south), but also the presence of the Pacific Ocean and the Andes with peaks up to 7000 m. This geography makes of Chile a true natural laboratory in which water is essential for the society and the economy of the country. The relevance of water resources for the country has become even more significant in the context of a mega-drought that has affected practically the entire territory in recent years, although large floods such as those in Atacama 2015 and 2017 also take place periodically. This unique book brings together the state-of-art knowledge about the hydrology of Chile and its water resources, with a particular focus on quantitative aspects. The chapters are prepared by many of the most relevant researchers and practitioners working in water resources in the country. High-quality research contributions on climate and meteorology, surface and subsurface hydrology, water quality, water monitoring, water resource and global change, among other issues, are presented in this unique book, which offers a useful guide for academicians, researchers, practitioners and managers dealing with diverse water-related issues in Chile and other regions with similar characteristics.

This is the first book in English to present a comprehensive analysis of the October 2019 social outbreak in Chile and its consequences for the country's political system. For almost 30 years (1990-2019), Chile was recognized as a model of political and economic stability in Latin America, but the 2019 protests put into question the whole structure of representation based on programmatic political parties. This contributed volume analyzes the causes of the social outbreak by examining the interaction between political parties and social movements in Chile since 2000, establishing bridges between the sociology of social movements and the political science of parties and forms of traditional political representation. The book is organized in three parts. The first part analyzes the collapse of the political party system in Chile. The second part shows how social movements introduced innovative forms of political mobilization that challenged the traditional forms of political representation. Finally, the third part presents case studies focusing on specific social movements and their contributions to the renewal of political representation in Chile. The Social Outburst and Political Representation in Chile will be a valuable resource for sociologists, political scientists and other social scientists interested in understanding the challenges posed to political parties and institutions by social movements formed by citizens who no longer see themselves represented by the traditional forms political participation.

This work, the result of initiatives that brings together several universities and specialists in the country, appears when a century has passed since the emergence of the history of international relations as a historical sub-discipline. For this reason, it has seemed relevant to us to signify this commemoration by addressing a theme that has its roots in the field of studies mentioned. Indeed, much has been written about the 1904 Treaty, both in Chile and Bolivia, hence we already see a series of recent studies that have clarified this process. For this reason, this book does not deal with the agreement itself, but with its relevance as a milestone in a decisive change in Chile's trajectory as the winner of the War of the Pacific, until 1929.

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are discrete warm-water anomalies events occurring in every ocean around the globe, in both coastal and open ocean, having major impacts on ecosystems, fisheries and aquaculture. Although processes leading to MHWs formation are becoming more and more studied since the beginning of the 2010s, the way they interact together to trigger MHWs remains not fully understood. Nevertheless, their link to human-induced global warming tends to be certain. The southern part of Chile (41°5’S - 56°S) is characterized by fjord ecosystems already experiencing global warming consequences, whether large-scale or local climate modifications. However, to the best of our knowledge, MHWs occurrence in Southern Chile has never been subject to studies, despite the fjord ecosystem’s vulnerability to climate warming. Therefore, we assessed a global analysis of the MHWs that have occurred between 1982 and 2020 along Central and South coastal Chile, from 29°S to 55°S. We found that the last decade was record-breaking in terms of duration, intensity and occurrence of MHWs. In 2016, succession of MHWs during austral autumn, winter and spring lead to the formation of the longest (148 days, almost 5 months) and most extreme events (2.25°C above the climatology) ever recorded along Chile between 1982 and 2020. Those events were due to the advection of warm-waters anomalies coming from the open ocean and combination of persisting high pressure system with lower winds having led to reduced heat transfer from the ocean to the atmosphere. In addition, a global context of positive phases of El Niño Southern Oscillation and Southern Annular Mode contributed to the MHWs formation.

This book explores the role of Chineseness or lo chino in the production of Chilean national identity. It does so by discussing the many voices, images, and intentions of diverse actors who contribute to stereotyping or problematizing Chineseness in Chile. The authors argue that in general, representing and perceiving China or Chineseness as the Other is part of a broader cultural and political strategy for various stakeholders to articulate Chile as either a Western country or one that is becoming-Western. The authors trace the evolution of the symbolic role that China and Chineseness play in defining racial, gendered, and class aspects of Chilean national social imaginary.
