Original book introduction: As a young man, I felt I was out there in the wild, experiencing the untouched natural world - but it was an illusion. The tragedy of our time has been happening all around us, barely noticeable from day to day -- the loss of our planet's wild places, its biodiversity.I have been witness to this decline. A Life on Our Planet is my witness statement, and my vision for the future. It is the story of how we came to make this, our greatest mistake -- and how, if we act now, we can yet put it right.

Abstract

Abstract

In this book, written between 1979 and 2020, Gilbert Lewis distills a lifetime of insights he garnered as a medical anthropologist. He asks: How do beliefs about illness in different societies influence their members' ability to heal? Despite the advances of Western medicine, what can it learn from non-Western societies that consider sickness and curing to be as much a matter of social relationships as biological states? What problems arise when one set of therapeutic practices displaces another? Lewis compares Indigenous medical beliefs in New Guinea in 1968, when villagers were largely self-reliant, and in 1983, after they became dependent on Western medicine. He then widens his comparative scope by turning to West Africa and discussing a therapeutic community run by a prophet who heals the ill through confession and long-term residential care. Pandora's Box began life with the prestigious Lewis Henry Morgan Lectures that Gilbert Lewis delivered in 1979 at the University of Rochester. He expanded them with materials gathered over the next forty years, completing the manuscript a few weeks before his death. Engagingly written, this book will inspire anthropologists, medical professionals, students, and curious readers to look with new eyes at current crises in world health.

Abstract

"Originally published in 1904, Commanders of the Dining Room features brief biographies of over 50 African American head waiters and front-of-house restaurant staff. Maccannon, himself an African American and a former headwaiter, also offers a quick portrait of the Head and Second Waiters' National Benefit Association. The HSWNBA quickly became a union (of sorts) for the industry and for African American hotel workers. Though the HSWNBA was formed in Chicago and held conventions there, many of the waiters profiled in this book hail from southern restaurants. Maccannon published Commanders to increase the visibility and stature of Black waiters; to assure employers that they could count on members of the HSWNBA to thoroughly know their business; to attest to their commitment to be dependable workers who would not create labor unrest; and to showcase model African American manhood. Commanders proclaimed to young waiters that they could achieve success if they educated themselves, worked hard, and joined an association like the HSWBA. In Commanders they could see headwaiters, at the pinnacle of the profession, who had once started out at the bottom and worked their way to the top, overcoming a variety of challenges along the way. Maurice Carlos Ruffin's foreword provides a personal meditation on what Commanders might mean for contemporary audiences while simultaneously grounding the "respectability politics" of these men in the long Civil Rights Movement. And Danya Pilgrim's new introduction contextualizes Maccannon and his book in the early twentieth century"--

Abstract

Get the Summary of Jason L. Riley's Maverick in 20 minutes. Please note: This is a summary & not the original book. Original book introduction: Thomas Sowell is one of the great social theorists of our age. In a career spanning more than a half century, he has written over thirty books, covering topics from economic history and social inequality to political theory, race, and culture. His bold and unsentimental assaults on liberal orthodoxy have endeared him to many readers but have also enraged fellow intellectuals, the civil-rights establishment, and much of the mainstream media. The result has been a lack of acknowledgment of his scholarship among critics who prioritize political correctness.

Abstract

Get the Summary of Vivek Ramaswamy's Woke, Inc. in 20 minutes. Please note: This is a summary & not the original book. Original book introduction: Vivek Ramaswamy is a traitor to his class. He's founded multibillion-dollar enterprises, led a biotech company as CEO, he became a hedge fund partner in his 20s, trained as a scientist at Harvard and a lawyer at Yale, and grew up the child of immigrants in a small town in Ohio. Now he takes us behind the scenes into corporate boardrooms and five-star conferences, into Ivy League classrooms and secretive nonprofits, to reveal the defining scam of our century. The modern woke-industrial complex divides us as a people. By mixing morality with consumerism, America's elites prey on our innermost insecurities about who we really are. They sell us cheap social causes and skin-deep identities to satisfy our hunger for a cause and our search for meaning, at a moment when we as Americans lack both.
