Glenn Sestig, born in 1968 in Ghent, Belgium, graduated from the Henri Van De Velde institute in Antwerp and in 1999 established his practice. From the outset, his work focused on extreme precision, on a construction with such mastery of the architectural line, proportions and perspective that it is easy to forget the careful consideration that will have gone into his design and creation. In addition to the material and its interpretation, transparency and the play of reflection suggest rather than illustrate the endeavors that have resulted in the real grandeur of some projects, primarily places for public use. Glenn Sestig Architects is synonymous with contemporary elegance. Their work can be seen as monolithic and intuitive but always with a strong refined architectural identity. The cohesion or even clash between different exclusive and unique materials elevates this identity. The architect uses his own method of calculation, a sort of mental model from which flow the intelligence, equilibrium and soul of a place. The architecture is no longer a movement in time but becomes a declaration of a clear architectural vocabulary.

Les architectes belges Wim Van der Vurst et Koen Pauwels forment ensemble le cabinet d'architecture et d'architecture d'intérieur i.s.m. (i.c.w.).

a+u’s October issue features 18 projects, ranging from private residences to urban plazas, by architect Marie-José Van Hee, whose practice is based in Ghent, Belgium. Guest editor Hera Van Sande notes how Van Hee’s buildings “blend in with their environment as if they have always been there” and her “architectural spaces evoke repose, reflection, serenity, silence.” Working almost entirely in Flanders, Van Hee creates architectural works that are intensely personal, as an extension of her aesthetic passion, which also encompasses cooking, literature, and fashion. The projects presented here all begin with an aerial photograph of the broader site context alongside Van Hee’s sketches. These sketches, or rather black drawings, are layers of pencil lines drawn on top of each other. They communicate the architectural images that Van Hee visualizes as “her hand mediates between the mental images and the spatial projections on a sheet of paper” and “negotiate between her imagination and the constrictions of our physical world while she juggles different scales simultaneously,” as described in the introduction by Sam De Vocht.

Roger Boltshauser (Zurich, Switzerland, 1964) graduated at ETH Zurich in 1995. One year later he founded his office Boltshauser Architekten, and started working as Research Associate at the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta), and as Design Assistant for Peter Märkli visiting professorship, both at ETH Zurich. He has also taught at EPFL Lausanne, the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Dessau and the University of Technology Munich. He was the initiator and founding member of the architect group Krokodil in 2008. He was a member of the city planning commission of the City of Lucerne, of the Schweizer Baumuster-Centrale Zürich and, since 2018, he is a member of the building committee of the City of Zurich.Covering almost two decades of work by Roger Boltshauser, this issue takes a fresh look at the Zurich-based architect’s uniquely contemporary manner of expression. With profiles of more than 20 projects conceived since the turn of the century, it outlines Boltshauser’s approach to materials and the methods he uses to reveal their intrinsic constructive and structural possibilities. Among the highlights are the rammed earth Rauch House, a clay observation tower at the Brickworks Museum in Cham, Oerlikon Sports and Swimming Centre, Ozeanium at Basel Zoo, and more. The issue also features a conversation with the architect and Jonathan Sergison, plus an essay by Jesús Vassallo.

Palinda Kannangara (born 1970, Kolonnawa, Sri Lanka) has a background in mathematics and architecture. He majored in mathematics for his BSc (1996), however his primary calling was elsewhere. In 1994, he joined a study course conducted by the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects. As a student, he trained under Sri Lankan modernist architect Anura Rathnavibushana, who had worked with Geoffrey Bawa for 16 years. He established an independent practice in 2005, a year after receiving his Charter. His studio is now located in Rajagiriya, Sri Lanka. Palinda Kannangara Architects is an award-winning Sri Lankan architecture firm known for its experiential architecture that hinges on simplicity and connection with the natural environment. The firm's work has been recognized for its contextual sensitivity, experimental use of materials and a minimalism that reflects the Sri Lankan ethos. The practice, now more than 15 years year old, has deliberately remained small and personalized. Its design and work process is always deeply connected to the site. The firm has worked across the island of Sri Lanka on a wide range of projects, often small in scale. With its personalized approach, the studio imbues each project with a sense of connectedness to the context, region, climate and landscape using locally-available materials and technology to provide a rich spatial experience. The studio’s architecture essentially focuses on capturing and expressing the spirit/magic of the place, whether it is a marsh, a cliff or an urbanscape. The site is the generator of all its ideas, and lies at the heart of the design process. Its architecture is always an intuitive reading of the site and aims to combine both the visceral and the pragmatic. The process is manual, employing a series of detailed drawings and sketches done on-site for working purposes and also physical models built in the office. Palinda Kannangara Architects’ designs are never frozen: they continue to evolve 'on site'.

The third book in the Architectural Research Tribune collection is dedicated to the thought and craft of Australian architect Glenn Murcutt. The proposal by the Argentinean architect and researcher Matías Beccar Varela is a magnificent example of the possibilities of the conversation format and the lessons that can be drawn from Murcutt’s creative processes for the enormous challenges facing architecture today, specifically in relation to our footprint on the planet. Kenneth Frampton in his preface notes how the book “reminds us of the lasting poetic and practical pertinence of Murcutt’s exceptional ecological vision which while specifically addressed for the varying climate of the Australian continent, is of equal relevance for the cultivation of architecture world-wide”. The conversations took place in various Murcutt’s everyday locations between December 2018 and January 2019, and are accompanied by a series of Murcutt’s original drawings of very different natures, from initial or schematic sketches to final and constructive drawings.

Ten conversations on current issues and timeless aspects of architecture form an inspirational reader for both professionals and anyone with an interest in architecture. Sergison Bates architects, established in 1996 and today running offices in London, Zurich, and Brussels, have made a name for themselves with projects ranging from housing to care homes, from educational and cultural institutions to urban-scale regeneration designs. Since the outset, the partners have engaged with the debate within the professions and have curated a number of exhibitions about the themes they explore in their teaching and practice. This book features ten conversations Jonathan Sergison, Stephen Bates, and Mark Tuff have conducted with prominent Swiss-based architects, historians, and researchers and in which they reflect with their guests on the many aspects of making, teaching, and writing architecture. Toipcs and guests include: Learning from the European City (Roger Diener), The Provocation of Sustainability (Sascha Roesler), Rethinking Housing Conventions (Jean-Paul Jaccaud), Learning from the Recent Past (Stanislaus von Moos), Thinking and Writing (Martin Steinmann), Exploring Construction (Roger Boltshauser), Shaping Public Space (Maria Conen and Raoul Sigl), Finding and Repurposing (Elisabeth and Martin Boesch), Lessons from Teaching (Ludovica Molo), and Working Methods (Oliver Lütjens and Thomas Padmanabhan). The lively dialogues draw shared experiences in practice, teaching, and research, and form an inspirational reader for anyone with a deeper interest in architectural practice.
