In an era where English has several standard varieties, British English has been considered the reference norm for teaching English as a foreign language in Europe for several hundred years. With the advent of globalisation and the cultural influence of the United States, it seems necessary to examine the current state of this norm in the education system in French-speaking Belgium, but also the attitudes displayed by those in the education system who could uphold the state of the linguistic norm. This dissertation investigates the reference norm of EFL in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, with a choice between the two predominant standard varieties: British English and American English. The analysis was conducted both quantitatively, through a sociolinguistic survey carried out among (student) teachers, and qualitatively by means of interviews with inspectors, educational advisors and professors who could have an influence on the variety of English promoted and learned in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

African American English (AAE) is a major area of research in linguistics, but until now, work has primarily been focused on AAE as it is spoken amongst the working classes. From its historical development to its contemporary context, this is the first full-length overview of the use and evaluation of AAE by middle class speakers, giving voice to this relatively neglected segment of the African American speech community. Weldon offers a unique first-person account of middle class AAE, and highlights distinguishing elements such as codeswitching, camouflaged feature usage, Standard AAE, and talking/sounding 'Black' vs. 'Proper'. Readers can hear authentic excerpts and audio prompts of the language described through a wide range of audio files, which can be accessed directly from the book's page using QR technology or through the book's online Resource Tab. Engaging and accessible, it will help students and researchers gain a broader understanding of both the African American speech community and the AAE continuum.

This Special Issue includes fifteen original state-of-the-art research articles from leading scholars that examine cross-linguistic influence in bilingual speech. These experimental studies contribute to the growing number of studies on multilingual phonetics and phonology by introducing novel empirical data collection techniques, sophisticated methodologies, and acoustic analyses, while also presenting findings that provide robust theoretical implications to a variety of subfields, such as L2 acquisition, L3 acquisition, laboratory phonology, acoustic phonetics, psycholinguistics, sociophonetics, blingualism, and language contact. These studies in this book further elucidate the nature of phonetic interactions in the context of bilingualism and multilingualism and outline future directions in multilingual phonetics and phonology research.
