Abstract

One of the foremost artistic innovators of abstraction in the 20th century, Vasily Kandinsky sought to liberate painting from its ties to the natural world and promote the spiritual in art. This richly illustrated publication looks at Kandinsky anew, through a critical lens, reframing our understanding of this vital figure of European modernism, who was also a prolific aesthetic theorist and writer.

A series of multidisciplinary essays considers his nuanced relationships with the avant-garde artistic communities in which he lived and made art; the influence of anarchism and radical ecology; experimental methods of improvisation exploring the interplay between sight and sound; his place among Bauhaus peers whose contributions have been underrecognized; and his return, toward the end of his life, to long-held cultural interests that date back to his early years in Russia. Tracing Kandinsky’s life and work through his years in Moscow, several cities in Germany, and Paris, the texts offer striking new insights into an artist whose creative production and style were intimately tied to a sense of place—and displacement—and evolved amid the political and social upheavals catalyzed by the Russian Revolution and World Wars I and II.

Kandinsky’s history is closely linked to that of the Guggenheim Museum. Solomon R. Guggenheim began collecting the artist’s work in 1929; a year later, they would meet at the Bauhaus, in Dessau. This book highlights more than ninety works from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation’s preeminent Kandinsky holdings, presenting the full arc of his artistic development and career. Included are paintings in oil and oil with sand, reverse-glass paintings, as well as woodcuts, watercolors, and drawings on paper. An illustrated chronicle of Kandinsky’s life and career, including selected exhibitions and publications, rounds out the volume.

Abstract

Abstract

Dutch artist Jacqueline de Jong creates bold works that combine humour, eroticism, violence, and political commitment using her exuberant style and figuration. Since the early 1960s, De Jong has embraced the figurative image as a space for confusion and subversion. She belongs to a group of artists who reintroduced narration by borrowing elements from pop culture, cinema, and illustration—all the while mixing the absurd with the mysterious. With a penchant for experimentation, De Jong plays with shape, style, and pictorial idioms in order to unfold an idiosyncratic and subversive body of work.Born in the Netherlands in 1939, de Jong travelled extensively across Europe coming into contact with many avant-garde movements. She was part, for instance, in the radical Situationist International group, whose intention was to put an end to the “Society of the Spectacle” and consumer culture. While active as a painter, she was also editor and graphic designer of The Situationist Times.

Abstract

In this thorough critical appraisal, 16 specialists on modern art, art history, philosophy and religious studies examine the unique art, the cultural circumstances and art-historical positioning of Swedish abstractionist Hilma af Klint. Topics explored here range from early abstract art and the impact of Darwinism to Goethe's color theory, as well as the importance of occult religious movements such as theosophy and anthroposophy that influenced the early modernists, and discussions of af Klint's own personal diary notes and research. The book is based on the seminars that were held in conjunction with the exhibition "Hilma af Klint: A Pioneer of Abstraction" in 2013. This extremely successful exhibition attracted a record number of visitors to the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, after which it continued to the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum in Berlin and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark.

Abstract

N. de Stael (1914-1955), Russian naturalized French painter. This long-awaited new edition of the Catalog raisonné of the painted work of Nicolas de Staël is the third since 1968, then established by the painter’s widow, Françoise de Staël, who died in 2012. Revised and augmented by Marie du Bouchet and Gustave de Staël , it takes again the out-of-print version of 1997 published by Editions Ides et Calendes, renewing it with enriched notices of the numerous exhibitions, books and sales of works that have brought Nicolas de Staël’s painting to life since then. A long research work has made it possible, thanks to Collectors, Auction Houses, Galleries and Museums, to bring together a very large number of color reproductions. We are therefore particularly happy today to be able to publish a full-color catalog raisonné for the first time. The body of work today consists of 1,120 paintings. Nineteen paintings were added, including 7 which have been recognized since 1997 as being by Nicolas de Staël and 7 sketches which were already included in the first catalog raisonné in 1968, then withdrawn by Françoise de Staël in the edition. from 1997. It was decided to reinstate them in order to produce an exhaustive catalog of the work. Also for the first time, this catalog raisonné is appearing in English, which reflects the international presence of the work. As a large number of paintings are held in American and British private or museum collections, the choice of English for this publication seemed obvious to us. The texts which are part of the founding writings of Nicolas de Staël’s work, such as that of André Chastel, Roger van Gindertael, Germain Viatte or Anne de Staël will therefore be accessible to amateur readers and foreign collectors. We are grateful to Madame Eliza Rathbone (recognized specialist in the painter’s work) for writing an introduction which traces with great precision the history of Nicolas de Staël’s fame in the United States. This “Catalog raisonné of paintings” echoes the “Catalog raisonné of works on paper” published in 2013 by Editions Ides et Calendes.

Abstract

With a few notable exceptions, the fundamental role that women played in the development of abstract art has long been underestimated, and their work has not received the same critical attention as that of their male counterparts. Now, at last, the tide is turning. The latest historiographical advances illustrated by numerous recent publications, monographs and thematic exhibitions make it possible to reassess the importance of the contribution of women artists to the different currents of abstraction, while at the same time questioning the patterns of the past. Edited by Christine Macel, this catalogue and the exhibition it accompanies highlights the contributions of a hundred or so women artists to abstraction up to the 1980s, with a few unprecedented forays into the 19th century. By focusing on the careers of artists so often unjustly eclipsed, the book questions the established canons and offers an alternative history of abstraction, from the symbolist abstraction of Hilma Af Klint, to the sensual abstraction of Huguette Caland, to the purist non-objective approach of Verena Von Loewensberg. Essays by noted scholars explore the techniques, concerns and legacies of these women, shedding light on their unique experiences and offering keen new reflections on their work and the movement as a whole. French edition 'Elles font l'abstraction', ISBN 9782844268945 (Centre Pompidou). Exhibition: Centre Pompidou, Paris, France (05.05. - 23.08.2021) / Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, Spain (22.10.2021 - 27.02.2022).
