Journaliste de mode, Alice Pfeiffer observe ses collègues accumuler des pièces fabuleuses au fil des collections, des saisons et des ventes presse. Pas elle. Pour son plus grand plaisir, elle collectionne « les trucs moches ». Ce que l’on nomme « moche » touche souvent à l’affect, au rire, ou encore au réconfort. Et il est tendance : pensons aux chaussures Crocs, aux concours des pulls moches de Noël, jusqu'aux nains de jardin dans l’art contemporain ! Il peut même devenir une revendication, une fierté, voire une façon de déconstruire l’académisme des dogmes. Ce manifeste du mauvais goût propose une théorie audacieuse pour assumer enfin le kitsch, le ringard, le clinquant.

The book takes a close look at how small- to mid-scale institutional models depart, each in a different way, from the traditional formats of the white cube. Structured around a questionnaire of thirteen questions posed to 15 different self-organized art institutions including Asakusa, Kunstverein, Louise Dany, Pivô, RAW Material Company, and The Artist's Institute, the book brings together a toolbox of examples giving insights into the murky and meticulous work of constructing an institutional platform - the "hows", "whats", and "whys" - spoken of by someone on the inside, in the engine room. The focus thus revolves around the operation of alternative mechanisms, instigating unconventional hierarchies and interdependencies between artwork, artist, audience, institution - between participants and authors, agents and aliens. The institutional contributions are bracketed by an introductory roundtable by Rhea Dall, Prem Krishnamurthy, and Chris Sharp, an essay reflecting on the necessity and irreverence of Ashkal Alwan by Christine Tohme, and a conversation between Dall and Chris Kraus on collective practices. The book is a sequel to the Bande à part conference on independent art institutions held at UKS (Unge Kunstneres Samfund / Young Artists' Society) in Oslo in 2019. Dit handboek biedt een inleiding op de belangrijkste stromingen en tendensen in de discipline van de antropologie. Het behandelt de troebele wateren waaruit de discipline is ontstaan, vanaf het ontstaan van het denken over 'de ander' in de Westerse geschiedschrijving en het racisme in de 19e eeuw tot aan de geboorte van een volwassen wordende antropologie in de Angelsaksische wereld, die zich afkeert van racistische theorie en onderdrukking en een vakgebied op zichzelf wordt. In het boek wordt gefocust op de voornaamste methodologie binnen de antropologie: langdurig veldwerk volgens de methode van de participerende observatie, door zich onder te dompelen in een andere cultuur. Veldonderzoek blijft ook vandaag een belangrijk aspect van het labeur van elke antropoloog, en biedt zo inzage in culturen vanuit een kennis en epistemologie die niet per se de dominante 'witte' variant is.
